after upgrading my snake to a larger tank, and changed substrate from forest bedding to earth covered in forest bedding her attitude has changed dramatically. she (creamsicle) now burrows into the earth 90% of the day.
when i dig her up for feeding or tank cleaning she seems VERY agitated. she tagged me 4 times before she caught scent and calmed a bit... but i even got a tail rattle..
just wondering if anyone has suggestions? is it the tank, the dirt, or is she just tweaked from the move?

i forgot to add that she's always been an EXTREMELY shy eatter.
but during handling she was the most docile thing ever. she'd find a warm spot in my shirt or around my wrist and sit for hours.
now she constricts, breathes quickly, and waves her head around

Did you leave her alone for a few days after changing her environment?
If not I would let her be for a few days and if no improvement then change back to her old substrate setup.
The breathing heavily after a change in substrate would worry me as a possible symptom of a respiritory problem, is there any wheezing ?
What is the humidity now ? is the earth moist in any way ?

she only breathes like that outside the tank... inside she's fine... as soon as i picked her up, her little lung started pumpin' like mad, tongue flickin fast... actually struck at me 4 times, in a row. so fast i didn't know what was happening. she calmed down after a short bit.. will let her chill for a bit... and i'll keep an eye on her breathing.
if she doesn't mellow out i'm going to change the tank... taking the water / soil out shortly anyways

I would definentally take jnky's advice. My snake was jumpy when i canged his substrate. Let her before a while and she should settle down. Good luck!
