Aren't I?
I just fed Lucile her weekly two pinkies. I was pleasently surprised at how well she acted about me not only holding her, but moving the water dish that she was hiding under in order to pick her up. She was well content to let me hold her for a minute before putting her in a smaller carrying cage to feed her. I had been a little worried about holding her, since I haven't made a habit of it for some time now. Now that the worry is gone, I'm gonna try to hold her some every day to get her more used to it. I'm jealous of hearing about all you out there who can get your corn snake out for 30 minutes to an hour at a time and it isn't stressed about it.

Problem- I'm going off to college next year. I highly doubt I'll convince my mom to put it in her schedule to hold Lucile regularly to keep her from 'going wild'.
Hopefully, by the time I go to college, my friend who's a year ahead of me and going to the same college will have an apartment by then and he'll keep her for me (he's the one that worked at the pet shop where I bought her and suggested her to me in the first place).

Anyhow- just wanted to post about my happiness that Lucile isn't too far beyond getting used to being handled after all this time. :)

She probably would be fine even without you handling her often. If she's generally mellow, I suspect that she'd settle rapidly even after some time of no handling.

hey...there have been...

periods in the past few months where I've had very little time to handle my snake, too. it happens. i've been holding him more now cuz i'm not as busy...he is still as calm as the day i got him when he was just a newbie to the world. he's a little more curious to find out exactly what he's slithering around on, but he is still very docile and chilled out. i want to handle him more because i want him to remain calm and friendly once he reaches adulthood.

as for college...dorm rules suck royally!!! i was a resident assistant for a year and during room inspections i found everything from pet lizards to rats to hermit crabs...ofcourse it's against the rules, but i simply pretended i didn't see them and moved on with my inspection :) as a student authority in the dorm it's VERY difficult to nail someone for something like that because a lot of my residents were my friends. i simply said, "you know you're not supposed to have animals in the dorm, i suggest you find another home for it, but...i willl most likely refrain from following up on this issue." pets, ah, i let them go and if asked by my supervisor i claimed i knew nothing about them. i also kept pets secretly in my dorm room when i was a freshman and my best friend kept a cat in hers for a whole month without ever getting caught :)

a snake requires a larger enclosure then hermit crabs and goldfish and you probably don't wanna risk leaving one in your dorm because the eye of authority will most likely catch it as it is more difficult to hide. if your friend has an apartment then leaving your snake there is a great idea, but a lot of complexes have strict rules about pets...and when they do allow them they require a separate deposit. i almost had to give my snake up when i moved into my studio, but i made a deal with my landlord and it all worked out in the end. good luck :)

how thourough and how often are the dorms inspected? Also, is there warning when they are coming?
Happy for your good news about handling :)

at most colleges...

dorm room inspections take place about two or three times a semester and notice should be given by the campus life office often as to when you should expect them to arrive and request entry. the only times a resident director should be able to enter your room without giving advanced notice is...during a firedrill when they have to enter each room to make sure all occupants have exited the premises, that none are left behind sleeping or...uh...stuff...or if they are under the suspicion that you are keeping drugs or alcohol in the room or anything else illegal or "against the rules" for that matter, which ofcourse would include snakes, but if you keep it quiet and have a room mate isn't anti-serpent you should be alright. the other time would be the day you leave for a long break or at the end of the school year to check for damages and food wastes, stuff of that nature.

hide your snake under the bed or in the closet and toss some dirty laundry over the enclosure til the campus life staff leaves. that's what all my friends did :)

That's what I figured/hoped for.
***Pray for cool roommate ****pray for cool roommate***
lol, I do have a few years though.

Hehehe
I doubt my friend will stand for an apartment that won't allow him to at least have some reptiles. He has always worked at one pet shop or another and is working at a vet's office right now and loves reptiles. The main problem being that his mom won't get within a mile of any snake whatsoever. I guess when God said "and I will put enmity between you and the snake", she got a few extra helpings of enmity. :p
So I'm sure he'll have to have a pet-allowing apartment, so he can finally have some in-house reptiles.

About handling Lucile- she always gets under her dagblasted water dish to curl up and sleep. Clever, since I can't very well move it off of her to pick her up without inevitably spilling water all over the place. Outfoxed by a snake! :)

Pity the chatroom won't work on this computer and I've got to keep this one online to finish my dad's virus scan. Ah well...

mine used to go....

under the water bowl, but he can't do it anymore. He forgot how or something, it's really odd.
