Removing an UTH....Any ideas?

I currently have two corns in a 65 gal. tank. I have the tank divided equally down the middle, so I have an UTH on each side. Well now I am thinking of getting another tank for my youngest corn and letting my 4 year old have the 65 gal. Problem is that the UTH is stuck to the bottom with some kind of adhesive that is like a freakin eppoxy. I was hoping to be able to take it off and re-use it in my new tank. I was hoping someone had taken one off before, or knew of an idea to get it off without ruining it. Any input is appreciated.

Thanks,

Eric

I don't know if you'll be able to get it off, but when setting up the new tank, one way to avoid that problem (if you can't find a UTH that doesn't have the adhesive on it) is to remove the backing to the adhesive side and lay a square of aluminum foil over the sticky stuff. Smooth it on, then trim to the edges. That way you can lay it on a tile, or secure it by tape to the bottom of the viv and yet be able to move it around/remove it later. It's what I did for mine. Works pretty well. :) Good luck.

I unfortunately am forced to disagree with Quigs. I've pulled several UTH's from the bottom of takes with no seeming ill affects to the UTH. I've simply pulled the UTH off carefully, and I've also used a razor blade to skim the glue from between the UTH and the tank. Problem with using the blade is to obviously be sure not to cut through the plastic housing the heating elements. Usually the older they are, ie longer they've been attached and used, the easier they are to come off.

Hope that helps you.

will the tank be empty? cuz if so u cud se sum washing up liquid that gets rid of glue and stickey stuff...

There is one brand of UTH that doesn't have adhesive on it - you secure it with duct tape. I have one of each kind (adhesive and non-adhesive) and they both seem to work equally well. Not sure what the brand name is though, but I know I bought it at one of the local pet store (not a national pet store, though).

I would definatley go out and buy that one. Just so you can use it over and over again! No idea of the brand? :( I need to do out a purchase a few more UTH.

Thanks!

I just did a little checking - they are called Cobra heat mats, and you can order them at petco.com or petsmart.com. There are a few different sizes, and cornman was correct - they were originally sold in the UK, but they are now available in the US.

their was someone else from the US after 1 after i told them about them but i can't think who....
Anyway they are great as you can move them and swap sized for higher lower temps in your snake room (IE summer/winter temps).
