Reptile Shows In Illinois

Hissssssss
I've been to Scott Smith's All Animal Expo several time over the last two months in DuPage County, Illinois. Pretty good show. Does anyone know anything about the Lake County, Illinois, show? It's sponsored by ZooMed, so I'm assuming it will be pretty good. It's about an hour and a half drive, so I don't want to drive all that way for nothing.

I used to do the Lake County show. It is small with few vendors and fewer patrons. They went through a tough transition when the fairgrounds were sold and they had to move. The lack of planning and leadership left them scrambling for a venue and then to add insult to injury they did not properly publicize the new site. That included telling their vendors where the new site was going to be. A lot of the same vendors from Scott's show did Lake County. So you see the same stock in a different location.
There is also the Indie show, the Indie Expo, Tinley in Oct., Sewerfest in WI, and they are starting a new show closer in to Chicago proper. Next time you visit the Wheaton Show stop by and say "hi". This is a lousy time of year for selection on corns but I enjoy meeting forum folks. Just ask LBoz, Lori and Jazzgeek, Dale. They came and visited me at the last show and we had a blast.

Judging by their website, it looks like they're making the attempt to be viable. I'm split on whether or not I'll make the trip from Carol Stream. I guess it depends on whether or not the organizer sends me an updated vendor list that I requested through email.

I'll definitely stop by at Scott's next show on the 17th. I need to come in and get some frozen feeders. The bad thing is that I always seem to leave with stuff that I had no intention of buying!

A "blast" is a bit of an understatement!! It was awesome! I want to come to your next show, Terri...the White Chocolate Grill is calling out to me!

Because, y'know, it's all about the animals. :grin01:

Kingwoz, I emailed a bunch of the vendors on the lists from both the events to confirm if they will be there and see if they have corns available. Will let you know.

Antioch is just an hour drive for me and the trip would fit in with the kid sport schedule and a bunch up North, but I still don't want to waste my time.

I'm learning that this is a difficult time to find baby corns. Is the high season for hatching about July? My boys are going crazy. I hope I don't have to wait that long.

I've had a few breeders tell me they'll have some as early at late May, but I'd ideally not deal with shipping. Keeping my fingers crossed!

The best selection of corns starts around late June early July. Make sure you are getting an animal that is eating well on frozen thawed. Some vendors sell out of the egg without telling the buyer, so be forewarned. Did you have a specific morph in mind? I have some nice adults and subadults available. Depending on the age of your children a hatchling might not be a good fit. They are a little touchier than a well established adult. Just a thought...

Leonore,

Call me Ed. Should be easier to type!

I went to the show last weekend in DuPage and there were a few decent year old corns. Pueblan milksnakes were in abundance, though, which are very pretty snakes, and I'm considering adding one to my collection once I learn all I can about them. Two weeks prior to that it seemed that everyone had year old corns. I have a normal year old that is perfect and a charcoal hatchling that is a bit of a handful, especially in the feeding department. He/she is just a bit skitish. I got the charcoal for $10. I don't think the seller knew what he had. I wish I would have bought both of the charcoals that he was selling! Anyway, I agree with Terri - hatchlings may be a bit much for the kids.

Who, knows, this show may have a boatload of year-olds. I have heard back from two vendors, SWreptiles and Snakesunlimited, that they will not be at the show.

Herps and More is the only one that responded that he will be at the show on the 17th, but didn't say if he had corns. Ugh, I'm disappointed, but I don't think that these shows are going to be worth the trip.

After all my research, I have to confess that I'd prefer a baby. I can certainly handle the care and the boys "get it". They have no problem keeping their hands out of the fish tank and are very respectful of the neighbors' zoo-like collection of animals.

Thanks for the advice/warning, Terri. I will be sure to ask about shed and feed history before I take an animal home. I don't want one THAT young. Kathy's book (aka my new bible) has a lot of good advice on that too.

Yeah, I'm thinking Lake County will be a bust. That's OK, I have enough frozen food to get by until the show in DuPage on Sunday, 5/17. That may be a little closer for you too, and I can vouche for the quality of the DuPage show. It sounds like you may have been there before. Here's a link to a pretty comprehensive listing of reptile shows.

Ed and Terri,
I will let you know if we'll make it to DuPage next week... it's a little more tricky with the schedule. At this point, it might just be better for us to wait. We have a little vacation coming up so, while it's good to not disturb a new snake at first, I want to be there to keep an eye on it. I might want to hold off and see what kind of selection comes up in June. I read soooo much info on corn snakes, but skipped the breeding chapters, thinking I have no interest in breeding. Well duh, now I see that most corns are on pretty much the same breeding schedule. I got all excited about 6 or 8 weeks too early.
How's that for a classic newbie mistake?

It's not really a mistake, per say. I frequently keep animals back for this time of year. It just so happens that I was lucky enough to sell everything earlier this year. I also did more shows. The hard part about picking a hatchling during peak season is the sheer volume of animals to pick from. Wait and see your head will spin with the number of animals! lol I always warn people who come to the house to pick one out. It's like being in a toy store at 3 years old again, too many choices. Ask any breeder how hard it is to not make every cool looking animal a keeper.
Terri

Terri, I think you are actually pretty close to me. I might have to be one of those head spinning visitors when your babies are ready. :bird:
