Reptitemp 500?

I have 3 reptitemp 500 by zoomed. I got them on clearance at a local pet store. Because the packaging was dirty and roughed up, I paid $5 a piece. Which imo is a good deal.
Well it turns out that none of them have a probe. How does this unit work without a probe, or is the probe supposed to be the one on the heat cable?
The product also says it can be used with ceramic heaters, lamps, and uth's. I have the 3 of them wired to my racks and Im having a heck of a time adjusting the temps on a 5 tub belly heat rack, thats my test before I turn on the ones for my bigger rack.
Everytime I think I have it right, the temps spike or drop dramaticly. Even when set at mid range temps, when it gets to 70 degrees in here..the temps shoot up to the mid 90's...all said and done it a dimmer switch and not a thermostat unless im missing something..

Yes they are supposed to have probes. I don't see how they could possibly work without??

edit: Reptitemp 500r is a thermostat with a probe.

2 models

It seems there are 2 different models, reptitemp 500 is what I have and then there is reptitemp 500r. I am currently searching for the instructions, I believe I saved. Hopefully that will shed some light.

..

They have a reptitemp rheostat 500...But what I purchased is a thermostat in an older style packaging. There are different colors and schematics to the packaging itself for the reptitemp 500r...I must have thrown out the instructions or they werent in the packages...In comparison, mine say Reptitemp 500 thermostat as opposed to the only ones I find online that say Retptitemp 500R Thermostat...R for remote controlled/sensor.
If in fact the 500(mine) doesnt have a remote, probe, sensor or whatever you want to call it, how then does it judge the temp in the enclosure? With a colored dial that has no numbers? Its just wierd to me that it says thermostat. When without a probe its simply a dimmer. Im going to consider this a loss on the bargain hunting end.lol

google reptitemp 500

When you google it and look at the images, there are a few pics of the Reptitemp 500 thermostat. Thats all the info I can find on it though.

It has a dial? And you can plug into it? Then it's a rheostat. So you measure the temp with a probe, and I'd start with it on low, and then dial up a teeny bit every hour or so. So you want to set your temp according to what it reads at the hottest part of the day.

Even on/off thermostats with numbers on the dial aren't accurate. Or- the number isn't an accurate representation of what the set temp is. To have an accurate thermostat, you need proportional digital.

Never heard of a direct contact thermostat. You put it in the viv? How would that even work?

Wait- I found this image of it...

Apparently you stick it on the glass. Well- I'll be interested to hear how well it controls your temps!
