Reputation of Petco

Does anyone know if Petco is a good place to get frozen mice from? I've heard bad things about the sale of live animals ther but I don't know about feeders. Can any make any suggestions? If Petco is not a good place, does anyone know about the reputation of Pet Snake Snacks (in Dallas)? Sam

I don't know, but that's where I get mine.

They were much cheaper than a local pet store that sold them, and more convienient and uniform seeming.

That's what I've been feeding my snake, and he seems to like them. The one near me sells 2 kinds, a 6 pack of littler ones and the bulk bags with multi-sized ones that they pull out for you.

I think Stephen on this list buys from Petco, and thinks they're alright. I haven't heard anything bad.

Thanks for the input guys (and/or gals). One more question. Do you know if they vaccum seal their packs fo mice (such as a 50 pack of pinkies) or if they're just in a bag? What is the probability that you'll get a bad/rotten mouse?

my local petco only sells mice-on-ice 6 packs in pinky, fuzzy, and small mouse sizes. They are good looking mice, vacuum packed but $11 for the 6 pack. I've also found packages with missing mice and/or multiple sizes. Somebody is either stealing or they are feeding their animals and putting the packages back in the freezer.

Sam,

I used to buy from the Petco in Denton and I bought them individually. They had them in bags, in a bucket, in their freezer. The only thing I noticed was, when I switched from Petco to Big Cheese, the mice from Big Cheese looked more "pink" when thawed and the Petco mice looked more "red." I'm not really sure what this means, but I think beef turns a deeper red when it is aged, so I assume the mice I bought from Petco were dead longer before they were frozen than the ones from Big Cheese....but just a guess....my snakes ate them. And, if that is the case, then I guess it would be like feeding your family meat that had been in the fridge a while....not quite sure what you might get along with the meat.

Hope this helps.

Cindy

I used to get most of my frozen mice from petco, but sometimes they would not have any. They seemed like good mice, came in a freezerburn proof bag, and were gourmet rodent brand.

Now i get them from big cheese because they are alot cheeper. Petco was something like $1.05 for a rat. :uzi:

i get my rats...

...from Petco and for the most part they are alright. They come from gourmet rodent and my snakes have been eating them for a while.

My only complaints are:

1.) For a while they were always out of the size I needed (adult mice), and

2.) The sizes jump substantially. My snakes are now eating small rats, and these are atleast 3 times bigger then the adult mice, and the fuzzies were really small when compared to adult mice.

3.) Price. I ordered in bulk once, but I did not go through them very fast, and they were pinkies so my snakes were eating 3 or 4 at a time by the end, so I have to buy a few at a time and it gets expensive at about $2 a small rat. (hmm, maybe I should look into bulk again for the larger size?)
