resp. infection

I know that resp. infections are not fun and can kill your snake. Many people talk about them on this forum and others. But I have some questions. What are the signs, causes and cures? Also how can you "ward" them off? Thanks for the info.

one of my corns has one now...I found out because he was sneezing, and his nares (nostrils) were clogged. by the time I got him to the vet he was breathing with his mouth open. This is the second time this snake has had one...and I have many other snakes in my collection so I think that he might be particularly succeptable since none of the others has gotten sick. He is also one of the oldest snakes in my collection so that may have something to do with it too. Raising the temp in the enclosure can help fight it off if you catch it early. I've always gone to the vet and gotten antibiotics (Baytril) which is given in an injection every few days for a few weeks to a month. I thnk keeping the temp and humidity in the enclosure at optimum, and quarrantine any new animals, and you should be ok, although I changed nothing and my snake still got sick...so just keep an eye on them and take them to the vet quickly if you think they are sick.

1. Signs: Wheezing, sneezing, open-mouth breathing, puffed out throat, raised head, mucus in the mouth and bubbles coming from the nose. Sometimes if you hold them you can feel a rattle in the upper body as they breath.

2.Causes: It can be something as simple as wrong temps, humidity & dirty cages to a fungus, parasite or virus.

3. Cures: If the symptoms are mild you can try raising the heat in the cage for a few days, this gives the snake an artificial fever. If that does not help then you must get the snake to the vet. The vet is best able to determine which antibiotic to use and dosage.

As far as warding them off. Keep your cages very clean, temps and humidity appropiate and quarentine every new animal you add to your collection. A good idea if you have not had a fecal done then have it done. If parasites are present treatment will rid them of that problem.

Hope this helps answer some of your questions.
:) Alicia
