Rheostat Modification

So I have the Zoomed rheostat, which works.....well like crap to put it bluntly. So I am going to make a rheostat and am wondering if I can use the old rheostat cord and plug and just basically remove the switch and install a dimmer. In theory I think this would work because I believe the issue is the switch and its options which make it too hot, or should I just buy an extension cord. Thanks for the help.

is it too late to return the crappy rheostat? You can get a 500R thermostat for pretty much the same price online.

I'd get the cord, I imagine they're probably only a buck or 2.

I'm confused why you would take apart the zoomed. Why not just buy an $11 rheostat (lamp dimmer) from Walmart and plug the heat pad into it? No labor required.

I was under the assumption the dimmer was only the dimmer and nothing to connect it to, forcing me into making one using a gang box.

That's the wall mounted dimmer in the how-to thread. You can buy a pre made lamp dimmer at Walmart for $9 that works fine. I used one for a few months. You have to turn it almost all the way down and make very minute changes to adjust it, but it works fine.
