rheostat vs thermostat?

My cage will be in a pretty well controlled temperature environment. I keep temp pretty consistent year round.

Is there a reason to prefer a rheostat or a thermostat for controlling my UTH? My initial thought is that although a thermostat is more "advanced" in some ways, by actively controlling the temperature, I'm thinking the rheostat might actually be better at getting a consistent temperature, while the thermostat might "hunt" more as it switches on and off.

Or maybe it doesn't matter and I'm overthinking it. I do that a lot.

the rheostat or dimmer approach is the cheap way of accomplishing your target temperature. it may work fine for many situations, but takes more monitoring to be sure you've got what you want. it also doesn't respond to fluctuations between day/night, seasons, etc. again, just set and monitor it and you should be fine.

I have used both. I eventually gave up on the rheostat... it really didn't do the job whatsoever for my UTH (it brought the temp down but not to where I needed it). I tried it in the summer, and that was definitely not good!

I would say go for the thermostat. You will thank yourself in the long run :)

Super simple set it and forget it setup. My older corn absolutely loves how i have his viv set up. I keep the thermostat on about 87 on one side and the temp never gets above 90 on the warm side, and the other side is room temp. when he eats, he chills on the warm side and back and forth all day and all night any other time. :) I hope you enjoy it as much as i do.
