Rheostat?

I have the probe of my thermometer directly on the glass over the UTH and the temp is reading a whopping 106.5!! I guess I need a rheostat? Is this like a dimmer switch? Where can I get one of these and will it work on an extension cord?

My snake is arriving tomorrow and I may not have the temperature problem worked out by then. Can I tape a towel over the UTH and put the substrate on top of the towel for now? The other side of my viv is reading 75 degrees (ambient).

Do other folks tape the probe directly on the glass? If so, what is the temp reading that you get? I moved the other part of the thermometer over to the hot side and the temp was only 88 a few inches above the glass. It doesn't make sense.

Help!

Well, you will obviously not achieve the same temperature everywhere in the viv. Although 106 is to high. For the immediate problem make sure the snake can't burn itself on the hot spot. As long as the whole viv is not to hot it will find the best temperature anyway. Naturally this is only a shortterm solution.

I personally have no experience with dimmers. I use thermo timers that switch my heatcable on and off on one degree exact. I suppose your UTH is a bit to strong for the vivsize. Maybe a smaller on would be better.

Yes, I believe a rheostat could help out your situation. A rheostat is a fancy name for a dimmer switch, which can be purchased at any hardware store fairly inexpensively. I think the last one I bought was $5 or $6. They come in two different forms. Dial like that you turn to adjust or a slide which is the one I prefer. I think the slide is more stable and harder to accidently knock off of whack. There's different brands and extra doo-dads on different models. I go for cheap and plain, no extras.

I use them to regulate heat on flex watt in my racks. Works well but you have to keep an eye on the thermometer if you don't have a reliable therostat!

Lastly, yes they can be wired in line with an extension cord.

Hope this helps a little bit.

OFF TOPIC...

Why even bother wasting Rich's space and the rest of our time posting something as moronic as that? If you don't have a clue about the thread, simply move on but don't announce it!

Sorry about the rant but I, too am starting to get a bit peeved by certain individuals around here these days.
