rice as substrast?

hi everyone I was wondering can you use rice as a substrast for herps? I was sorta thinking for beardies in pitculatar because sannd is brocken glass so what about rice? could you use it for corns?

Rice would probably behave a lot like corn cob, it would by drying, too much for corns. I don't know much about beardies, but desert-dwelling herps that like sand would probably not mind rice. Corns aren't desert animals, so their substrate should reflect that.

Rice isn't inert like sand and would be a breeding ground for hordes of bacteria with the least bit of moisture or contact with feces. Your reptiles would be sitting in a bed of bacterial bloom all the time. My two cents.

Even without the bacteria possibility, unless you feed your snake outside of its enclosure, ingesting rice would be a problem. Aspen, Repti-bark, and other commercially available substrates are inexpensive and safe. It is probably best to use them.

Watch out for rice!

Rice also gets pretty sticky when wet. So if you fed inside your tank, rice would stick all over the food item and get swallowed. The problem then is that rice absorbs water and expands -- right inside your snakie's poor tummy. (I know you're not supposed to feed white rice to rodents, the expansion and dehydration can kill them.)

my 2 bits,

hey nicky,

why rice and not something else?

Rice will be very dry for the corns so it is not good. Also it will cause digestion problems too, if it is swallowed.

Rice is also compared to aspen bedding much more expensive and why don't you eat the rice and instead of use it as a substrate.......I think that it would be much more healthier for you than you using it to be a bedding for the corn.....

Good Luck and Happy Herping!

I gotta say that's one of the weiredest things i've ever heard.

I wouldn't suggest it. If you are having problems with substrates build a terrarium. They are easier to maintain than you might think.
