Rodent Pro BOI Thread

Keep in mind that some pet stores purchase their F/T from RodentPro. So you're not necessarily in the clear if you buy your mice from someone like PetCo.

Smack the panic button and have a tizzy. If you normally practice safe sanitary hygiene with the snake food, then it's no big deal. Ya know, like not picking your nose or biting your nails between bare-handed tossing f/t's at the gang.

Have you been watching me? Actually I have a booger phobia so I wouldn't be picking my nose but I do like to double check freshness so I lick every mouse as I pull them out of the bag.

I gotta admit, even though I'm pretty careful with my mice this weirded me out a bit. Ugh. I'm glad I AM careful with my mouse handling habits.

The reason the department of health got involved in the first place was because someone got sick enough to seek medical attention.

There are a few folks around here who breed their own mice and have confirmed they haven't gotten anything from Rodent Pro so hopefully I'm in the clear. I think PetCo is supplied by Gourmet Rodent? Maybe I'll put in a call to them. PetSmart I think is Arctic Mice, which is probably sourced from an outside company.

Licking mice isn't how it happened at RodentPro and their suppliers. I was just chatting with a friend in the industry and he said it is most commonly transmitted through the air; as in when cleaning soiled bedding and inhaling the dust etc.. That works for those that buy live but for those of us that buy F/T bad handling practices would surely put us at risk, albeit a small one.
RodentPro is currently shut down and per CDC orders destroying all stock. They have several employees in the hospital. It must be a nightmare for them. I know a lot of people are upset about the lack of communication on their part but just think of the chaos an epidemic such as this one can cause. Given that they do not farm all the animals they sell, (which is the common practice within the industry) they were victims of one of their supplier's bad luck. Poop rolls down hill.:shrugs: This is a tough blow to an already hurting industry.

Thanks Terri.
Are ALL frozen rodents a risk to us that have $1500 of their product in our freezers? (mostly mice here, but a couple baggies of unopened rat pups). Not a peep in the news or on their site about it. Can't they just irradiate the food like the other company does now since the last time something like this happened?

The thread at BOI is interesting. Someone reported on a different facility that had to destroy everything they had, including racks. There are a lot of facts, or something, over there.

To me, the sickness itself isn't the huge issue- its the fact that they hid it (If this is true, as there is no proof)

DYK This letter was just posted over at Fauna http://www.kingsnake.com/rodentpro.jpg It at least makes me feel better that my last order was in February and the last test was done in February. Now there are no clear answers as to when it was contracted between Feb. and May but at least it is sum sort of time line.

Thanks Terri.

Hey Dave, the disease, Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis, is a warm blood to warm blood virus. So your cold blooded rodent eaters are safe from the disease. With proper handling, which you have already mentioned, all F/T rodent feeding is safe as well. Anybody who manages to contact this disease from a frozen rodent is trying very hard to do so or they have a severely compromised immune system.
As for RodentPro announcing to the public what is happening at their facility, whose to say that was their decision. We are dealing with a government agency here too. Maybe it was the CDC's decision to keep a lid on it? I think I'll wait for the full story to break before I pass judgement.
