Root beer cornsnake

Picked this guy up this past Sunday. Was told that it is a "Root Beer" corn snake. Is this the correct name?

I named him Fiesty because he certainly fits his name. Squirms around when I try to pick him up and even attempts to bite (I think, I'm wearing gloves) or headbutt my hand.

Good feeder, just fed him. I'm hoping to breed him with a female corn. I need the practice of incubation. With him being on the fiesty side, will this be a hinderance to him breeding?

Here he is:

Great looking rootbeer! Yep, like already said Rootbeers are hybrids between corns and emoryis. I wouldn't suggest breeding him to a corn female - and definitely NOT sell his offspring as corns! Even if you bred him to a pure corn the babies would be hybrids and must be called such (rootbeers and creamsicles if there are amelanistic babies). BUT when breeding him back to a pure corn you'd reduce the amount of hybrid blood in babies and therefore they might not be very good examples of Rootbeer and Creamsicle.

Therefore if you want to breed him I'd suggest you find him a Creamsicle female. Creamsicle is also a hybrid between corn (amelanistic) and emoryi. So basically Rootbeer is "normal coloured creamsicle" or creamsicle is "amelanistic rootbeer" - which ever way you want to see it. If your rootbeer isn't het. amel you'd get a clutchfull of nice Rootbeers from breeding him to a Creamsicle. If he is het. amel you'd get both Rootbeers and Creamsicles. And most likely nice looking ones. At least the daddy is awesome! ;)

Interesting, thanks for the information guys.

marinneli, why not breed him to a normal corn? Personally I don't care about what comes out so much as long as they breed and produce eggs. I need the experience of incubation for when my chondros get bigger.

Right now I have a male butter corn:

and a normal (I think) female corn:

As you can see, the female is a LOT smaller so it's going to take awhile before she's breedable. But I'm hoping to pick up an adult female to breed.

Your butter and normal corns are very beautiful! :)

Of course you may do what ever you want to...but if I was you, I'd breed the Normal female to the Butter male. Then you'd get 100% pure corns and the hatchlings would be Normals het. Amel, Caramel and maybe Amels het. Caramel. You'd most likely to be able to sell them more easily than some sort of hybrids.

If you breed the normal female to the rootbeer male you'd most likely get only rootbeer babies (and maybe creamsicle babies) which due to the lowered amount of emoryi blood aren't probably that excellent examples of their morphs. The rootbeer babies would probably look a mixture of mom and dad...and those who want normal corns won't buy hybrids and those who want rootbeers want to get a TRUE rootbeer with strong rootbeer appearance. So those babies might be more difficult to sell. At least I belive it would be easier if the female was a nice Creamsicle or Rootbeer too. Then the babies would more likely be "top quality" rootbeers and creamsicles. In Europe for example nice yellowy orange creamsicles (high emoryi influence) are well wanted and people are ready to pay for them.

As you seem to have a very nice Rootbeer, why lower the quality in F1 (first generation of offspring) when you can practice the incubating by breeding a normal corn to a butter corn...?

But that's only my opinion.

Let's add....that you SHOULD care about what comes out of breedings! That's responsible breeding. Breeding should never be only about producing some snake babies - no matter what as long as they're snake babies. It should be about producing certain sort of snake babies, developping a morph, developping a certain feature etc. Breeding should be well planned and it should aim at something - other than just producing more crossbred snakes.

If you're going to produce snake babies anyway, why not produce babies that will be beneficial to the line/morph? I mean producing good quality babies which both retain the looks the morph should have AND which can be used for further breeding by someone else. You COULD do it anyway if you're already thinking about getting an adult female. It's only a matter of what kind of female you'll get for your rootbeer male. As you COULD get another rootbeer, creamsicle, striped creamsicle, creamsicko, snowsicle...any Corn x Emoryi cross....why not do it?

I think there are already too many breeders who only breed their snakes in order to get babies, and they don't even know for sure what morph their snakes are - not to mention identify the babies! Many creamsicles have been sold as amelanistic corns and many rootbeers have been sold as normal corns when people don't understand or know that their snakes (the parents) are hybrids. That causes problems when people breed the offspring further and further not knowing they're dealing with hybrids.

Personally, I thing the hybrid morphs and pure corn morphs should be bred separately.

Don't feel attacked. This is just what I think and feel and what I'd do.

Gotcha. And I do appreciate the comments. I do understand about breeding and perhaps what I meant and what I typed are 2 totally different things. Of course I care what comes out. I don't mean to say that I'm breeding just to get more babies.

I put the rootbeer up for sale/trade for a normal corn adult female to breed with the butter corn. I'm also possibly throwing in a female california king.

I like corn snakes, but since Father's Day, when my wife got me this guy, I'm all about chondros! :)

Eventually I'll get totally out of corn snakes. Maybe.
