Run Away Snake =(

Hey guys, so I had my first escape. My 09' (just acquired) charcoal hatchling decided to escape from his box in my rack while I was away for the weekend. So, I have no idea when he escaped. *sigh* I tried looking all over my room and didn't find it. So, I'm thinking that I'll try those traps with the inverted water bottle with the mouse in it. When is the best time to set up the traps? Is night time the best time to use that method? How many traps should I set up? Is there an efective scent radius for the mouse in bottle method? And what other methods are useful? I've heard of using tape lining the edges of the walls, but I've head that sometimes it can harm the snake.

Man, I'm so frustrated and upset right now. I can't believe that it was able to escape. The spacing between the shelf and the container isn't even big enough for the snake to push his nose through. So, I'm wondering how in the hell it was able to get out. Also, my house is kinda huge, so I have a feeling that it's going to be really hard to get my hatchling back. My home has 3 floors and lots of rooms. My room, where the snakes are kept, is on the 2nd floor. The 2nd and 3rd floors have carpet and the 1st is all tile, except for my brothers room (which I REALLY hope that it never goes there). Actually, I really hope that the snake never makes it to the first floor, because my brother doesn't know about it. And his wife is terrified of snakes. What do you guys think? Where is my hatchling most likely going to be roaming around? Cold tile floors or relatively warm carpet?

If anyone can provide me with any other methods of catching my hatchling, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Well all I can say is I hope you have better luck than we did. My 17 year old's 19 g king snake got out of it's viv in the night and I noticed it was missing in the afternoon the next day. We tore his entire bedroom apart, took his viv down from the entertainment center it was on and put it on the floor with various levels built up to it so the snake could go back in if it wanted. As well we rigged a heat lamp up just above the floor for a warm spot with a hide under it and left the water dish out. He lives in the basement, which is very cold in our house, so cold in face that in the summer he has to sleep with 3 heavy blankets or he freezes. Everyone got involved in the search. That was almost two months ago now. Needless to say there has been no sign of the elusive California King snake. Now one thing you might have going for you that we had against us..was we have 2 cats.

I wish you all the luck and keep us posted.

Oh wow, yeah, cats do change the odds quite a bit. I'm sorry to hear you haven't found your snake. I'm hoping the charcoal pops up by tomorrow morning. I've lined the doorways on the second floor with tape, so hopefully I'll catch it. If not, I'll be trying the mouse in a bottle trap. Since, it's feeding day for the other hatchlings tomorrow.

Man, I really wouldn't have as much of a problem with the snake being loose around the house. However, my sister-in-law hates snakes. And, they have a baby on the way soon, so they'll be pretty pissed off with me if they find a tiny snake slithering around the house. >.<;;; I'm praying really hard that, if anything, the hatchling sticks to the 2nd or 3rd floors.

This is gonna sound really stupid...don't activly look. You will scare the crap out of the snake. Just be aware and you will find him ;)

I keep our hatchling corns in the "Critter Keeper" ranch style enclosures. I do not trust them at that size in our racks, for just this reason. I have noticed with our racks that a PUSHING snake can somewhat shift the rack slightly and have a bit of a gap. Better safe than sorry. I wish you luck, though experience has proven that many times lost snakes are not found again.

That being said, Tara, my GF, recently recaptured a snow corn that escaped over a year ago. She is huge now. So it IS possible. Try the bottle trap... look in warm areas... hatchlings will be hard.

Thanks for all the support guys. =) Honestly, I have no real hope of finding the little guy. It's just that I NEED to find it before anyone else in my family/house does, because I'm keeping them in secret. So, if the little hatchling is found by anyone aside from me, all hell will break loose. I'm kinda hoping that it found its way outside. But, I have a feeling that it's inside the house still. Does anyone know if a dead hatching gives off a strong odor? Just in case it dies before I find it. >.<;;;

You can say that again! I lost a 350 gram BRIGHT ORANGE snake and couldn't find her for a half hour.

Good luck to the OP. My snake ended up in a closet, so think dark and tiny spaces.

Man, there's a million (literally) of tiny dark spaces in my home for the little hatchling to hide. *sigh* I wish there was such a device as a "snake finder".Wahhhh...I want it back already. >.<;;;

Wow

I bet its hiding in someone elses room because you cant look there but remember they are active at night so maybe use a flashlight and go looking around!

Ergh, ok. Just last night I had another hatchling break away from its box. For the record, boaphile hatchling racks DO NOT keep hatchlings in. *sigh* I'm very disappointed. I feel like I wasted my money. =(

Luckily, it got caught by the tape that I put around the parameter of my room (meant for catching the charcoal hatchling). And luckily I was still awake to hear the rustling of the corn trying to break free from the tape. However, in the process of removing the snake from the tape with (canola) oil (which took 2 hrs btw), it ripped of a good amount of its skin. *SIGH* So, I'm really worried that it might die on me. Grrr, I'm so upset right now.

So now, I'm paranoid about letting my other corns move about in their boxes. So, I put them in their deli cups and placed them on the warm side of their boxes. And they don't seem too happy about it either. I feel so bad though, beause the other hatchlings seemed to be fine just staying in their boxes. But, I'm just too scared to lose another one around my house.

Anyway. Just wondering, is there anything I can or should do for the hatchling that ripped off some of its skin? Should I put some antibiotic ointment on it?

Use plain ordinary antibiotic polysporin with out analgesic in it, and switch to paper towel. That is why most people will tell you not to use tape to find your missing snake because of the damage it causes...but hard lesson learned. So long as you can keep the wound clean, and it is not to severe, it should heal with a few sheds.

It is probably, not my place to say, but why not just come clean with your brother and let him know you have snakes... then he can warn his wife... help look for the MIA baby and you will feel better and then you can go out and get sterilite boxes and drill air holes and make suitable escape proof homes for the others. Just a thought.:shrugs:

Well, they know I have 1 snake. And they're alright with it as long as they don't see it. But, they're really paranoid about snakes because they think that the snake will come loose and hurt the baby once she's born. Not to mention, my brother kinda hinted to me that he wanted me to get rid of my snake because his wife had a nightmare that a snake bit her. And they think that my snake is going to come out and search for them. *shrug* And also, we live in our parents vacation home, and we're not allowed to have any pets. Not even fish. And my mom's not really an animal person. So, if she see's something that she doesn't want in her home, she'll kill it. Or have me get rid of it. That's why I'm taking all the precautions that I can to keep the snakes from escaping.

Yes, yes. I know. Every snake owner will at least have one escape in their lifetime. But, I was just trusting that the hatchling rack that I bought wouldn't allow the snakes to escape. Since, it was specially built to house hatchlings and all. *sigh* So much for that.
