Safety on lights

Hey i am building a new tank on the weekend. it will be from wood and I wonder whether it is necessary to secure the lights with wiremesh. Currently I do not have a secure cage around the bulb, but never have a good feeling about it. How do you guys handle that?
i know this is a basic question but I have seen both and wonder a bit. Is it enough to install the bulb out of reach of the snake??

Aye your right on the money for wanting to put a wire mesh around the light bulb. If the lighting is in the tank, some how snakes find a way to it.

My set up my lighting is outside of the tank. I have a 10 gallon with the lighting above the screen I have. Snice snake are cold blooded sometimes it takes them a while to figure out they are being burned unfortunately.

I know that you can purchase online, light gaurds for lighting. Maybe something to look in to.

I am really not sure how you have your tank set up. But go with your gut feeling in use some type of protection for your lighting.

Well the tank will have glass only on the front. that's why I can't put the lamp outside. i will look into the online shops. I actually havn't thought of that yet. The money won't be that much. I should b able to fork it out....

Acradon, You could build a light inside your viv by securing it in a box with a screen on the open side of the box where the light will come out. Iv done this in my viv and yes the snake checks it out but it cant get burned because of the screen.

You can also get lights with plastic coverings over the actual bulb at petstores. I've never had to use a light inside the cage but if I were to have to start that, thats what I would go with. I dont' think they're that expensive either.
