OK i made a rack and I'm staining it but then i just had a thought that the stain might hurt the snakes. Those of you who have make racks and stained em did u stain the tops of the shelves where the snakes can get to? Just dint wanna make a dumb mistake.

You could always varnish on top of the stain or you can now get a coloured varnish (built-in stain)........ :)

yeah i have the 1 step stuff with the laqure already in ... so u think this will be safe? i just want to double check ya know :)

I have used that stuff, all in one stain and "lacquer". I would definitely do a large sample piece first. I was not impress at all. The so called "one step" took longer than staining the wood and applying a finish coat. To me it was not worth it. It did not stain the way I wanted it to. Now I would shy away from lacquer too, only because of the flumes it put off. Or should I say make sure if drys out for a long.. time. There is a water base urethane you could use that dry much quicker and has very low odor and of course, clean up with water. I hope this help a little.

Good Luck

Yeah i already did it and its not the best but it will do . IL take your advise and let it dry for a good 3 days that should be good eh ? maybee il put a coat of that water base urethane Ur talking about over it after it dries good. Heck i dunno this is my first time doing this he he

The main problem was I was trying it on a projected that I wanted a good look of stain and couldn't "control" it and was hard to work with. The rule of thumb is that you should have at least three coasts of finish on the project, for a nice smooth and good coat than won't wear off and protect the project. This is not achieved with "one coat" I guess this depend on your taste.

I made a rack for brumating. Used stain then polyurethane over top. The smell stayed around for a few days. I guess it was safe for them because they went in on Dec 25th and came out today nice and healthy.

Cool thanks all for ya help . Went in garage tonight and there really isn't a smell i just put 2 coats on it don't need to look the greatest so hopefully in two days my snakes will have a new home :)
