I was able to pop into the zoo for a couple of hours on Saturday and snap a few pics. Nothing epic like some of Katie's pics. Just wandering-around types of pics. The hippo had a baby, and although I have no particular warm spot in my heart for the deadliest animal in Africa, they were pretty darned cute together. Baby kept mouthing a water jet, and mama just kept her muzzle resting on baby's back most of the time.

Stop buying palm oil and products with palm oil. Indonesian forests are being clear-cut for oil palm plantations at an astonishing rate. Since Bornean and Sumatran forests are the only places orangutans live, this is a particularly hard-hitting problem for them.

Those peacock photos are wonderful, but my favourite here is the portrait of the Colobus, thanks for sharing!

these photos have reminded me why I aspire to be a keeper. Awesome shots! Thanks for sharing.

You caught some beautiful shots! I'm happy to see two of my favourite birds ever: the Victoria crowned pigeon and the peacock.

we went to the zoo on monday also we saw mandrills "do it" not what i wanted my child to see at the zoo but i was told its rare to see that.. lol i hope you had a better time at the zoo then me this week lol

Haha! I guess as a primatologist and naturalist in general, it wouldn't bother me at all for my child to see that. I was surprised when I took pictures of the genitals of the male colobus monkeys (which have a highly visible white stripe of fur on a black background with a bright pink hairless penile head) and my aunt smacked me as if I was doing something mischievous. I wasn't. The pics didn't come out but if they had, I'd file them in my "genitals" folder for use in lectures. Lots of primates have lots of different combinations of brightly colored "junk," lots of primates have penile spines, females with elongated clitorises, etc. etc., and some primates use them for display purposes. These things are all very relevant to aspects of each species' behavior. For me (and all my friends), talking about that stuff is like talking about brains and guts. It's just one more important aspect of biology and behavior.

HAha funny she wasnt old enough to remenber or even know what went on its was just why did it have to be the first trip to the zoo.. lol =] i tried to take a pic of it but it was to fast, i personally taught it was a sad act, poor thing took like 10 secs and he was "finished" but it was interesting to see.. i didnt notice if there junk was different colored i mean his junk was bright red but i figured that was normal cause it was hot out! but i love there colored butts i have never seen anything so brightly colored like that.. =]

Oooo! I'm impressed that you know that's a Colobus just from the headshot.

It's called a Takin. An Asian caprid.

Glad everyone enjoyed them!
I love colobus, I used to see the ones at Howletts zoo park regularly when he boys were small.
(Is it related to musk oxen?)

Cool, I was wondering about the Takin, too. I don't believe I know that animal.

Of course my favorites are the pigeons and the Stephanie bird!!

What are the red pigs with the long ears? They look...European.

I think they are red river hogs?

I didn't know the Takin either. I also thought it was a musk-ox before I read the sign and came home and looked them up. LOL. The Stephanie bird.

Correctomundo!

Am I missing something, or is this guy 3 legged?!

Also, is s/he some kind of wild pig? It looks a lot furrier than the ones I've seen on the television that are supposedly the "new epidemic".

Great shots, Stephanie! No matter how long I live in Eugene I will always love Zoos. I grew up with the Henry Villas Zoo as my backyard in Madison, and the joy of visiting a zoo will never leave me.
