Sanitizing Substrate

Discordia

Cute Overload
By sanitize I mean debug. I'm planning on using aspen as substrate but I'm worried about possible wood mites even though I know it's not as big of an issue as with other substrates and they're not harmful to the snake, I just don't want them to spread past the tank or have to deal with them when cleaning.

To sanitize the aspen, I was thinking about freezing the whole bag...would any critters inside the bag try to escape and make their way into the contents of my freezer? Or would baking be a better choice? What temperature and how long do you need to bake the aspen to sanitize it?

Freezing it would work. When mites get cold they don't move around much. You could move the substrate into a large trash bag and tie the top off, if there is concern of the mites escaping into the freezer.

If baking, then pre-heat to 225 and then bake about 15-20 minutes.
