Saving skins

I just...

gently roll it up and store it in a ziploc bag (after they are good and dry). Then put it somewhere that is safe, where it won't get crushed.

i once had a ball pyth who passed away last year and i have 20 of his sheads i collect them because it is cool to see how much your snake grows over the years

Interesting Question....

Yes, they will probably remain in better condition if you keep them in ziploc bags, but I wanted to kind of show mine off...

So, a couple of years ago, I hung a big old cup rack over the head of the bed in my master bedroom, and started draping them over the pegs. (See pic below.)

But, within a 24-month span, I could no longer see the cup rack, and decided to take them all down.

I had everything from 10" first-sheds, to a 5'2" shed from my big Coral Snow.

Once it is completely dry, you can also have it laminated, so that it will be preserved and there is no risk of it tearing or being damaged. We have done this with several of the more colorful sheds, but it does mean you cannot feel the normal texture. It is really good for sheds that you want to use for herp shows and demonstrations because they show the size of the shed but people cannot rip the shed skin. It does get a bit of a reaction from the stationary store when you go in to have it done though.

On a side note related to skins, a Japanese friend shared a belief that the shed skin of snakes is supposed to bring you money if you keep a piece in your wallet - she got one from us, but I haven't heard how well it is working.

I am not so sure on the whole......

Mug with snake skins above the bed thing. Don't you think about how quickly those decompse in nature, and that they are decomposing above your heads while you sleep? Little particles of skin would be falling off of those skins as they get dryer and dryer. I think it is a great idea to save them.....dont get me wrong, but I like the Laminated idea, or the ziploc bag idea myself. I personally have never kept any of the sheds, because I did not know it was normal to do so. I have thought about it, but I would probably end up tossing it anyway. Well, that my 2 or 3 cents on the subject. Happy herping!! -Don

Decomposition of sheds...

Actually, my headboard was a good five inches from the wall, so any 'flakes' that might have fallen off would have probably dropped to the floor.

And I think the decomposition of snake sheds is probably quite different if they are left outdoors on the ground, or left in a tank with a snake crawling over it, than it is when it's hanging, totally dried, on a mug rack with nothing rubbing against it.

I don't know - maybe my snakes have thicker sheds than others, but I had some of those sheds for three years, and I only noticed a SLIGHT weakening in how tough they were when first shed and dried, and that was usually in the sheds from babies. None of them fell apart, or I would have noticed bits of them here and there.

Also, I never kept a 'weak shed'. I only ever kept full, one-piece sheds that felt very strong.

Perhaps it's the fact that I live in South Texas, where it's relatively humid most of the year.

I don't know. But they were quite the conversation piece when I showed them to people. And kids just love them!

My corn's due for his first shed since I got him any day now.

I would love to keep the skin if it comes off whole - is there anything I can do to ensure that this happens - apart from using a spray bottle to keep up humidity?

Veni :p

Lot's of fun things to do with sheds!

I have a modest collection of corns (somewhere in the teens) and a handful of other snakes, so I get my share of sheds. You can put them outside in the spring and watch birds gather them for nesting material, I do that every year. Or I often bring snakes to schools and the local Nature Center and bring some along to show kids when I explain the shed process. Invariably one will want a shed, so it helps to have several on hand for everyone. Thirdly, I have placed them all over the yard of an unfriendly neighbor (who I'd been told was mortified of snakes), although that was in my younger days and I don't suggest that anyone else do such. Unless you have a real jerk of a neighbor!

,,,,

Veni,,,dont give him a shower so he can shed,,just moist the tank,,raise the humidity,,,dont moist too much

too much water will ruin the skin..

Thanks for the advice - I'll be careful not to get him too wet! :)

Hopefully he'll shed tomorrow - his eyes have cleared again so I guess it could even be tonight!

Do snakes shed at night? Is it important to them what time of day it is?

just wondering

Thanks ;)

Veni

time of day is not a factor

I've seen mine shed at many different hours. Don't hold your breath that it'll be tonight. Sometimes it's a couple of days after the eyes go clear. And don't stress about the humidity... unless the cage is REALLY dry, it should shed in one piece just fine. I don't mist my cages unless I think about it when one has gone clear and seldom get torn sheds. They manage in the wild at all levels of humidity. It helps, but just the waterbowl's very presence is probably enough to avoid problems.

They bronze baby shoes all the time...

Get those baby sheds "bronzed". hehe ;)

Actually we hang big sheds out back behind the barn as kinda "voodoo" to keep unwanted "2 legged" predators/ Varmits at bay.
Between the huge dogs and the "rattlers" loose on the property, there are better places for them to "wander" around.
Our intruder discouragement system include signs promising an "armed response".
For some reason, we've never had a problem. ;)

Do you feel lucky, punk?

CowBoyWay,

Are you telling me that your dogs and snakes pack heat?? I knew AZ had liberal open carry laws but that is awesome! :D

The good sheds I keep in a ziplock bag and when I go to my sisters school I show the sheds as a size comparison and give some sheds to the kids.
