scale sticking up

hi, i just noticed on my 3 year old female that the middle scale on her head has came loose and is sticking up. im not sure what to do with it, will i damage her by pulling it off or should i just leave it on. thanks.

Could it be from an old shed? If so you should be able to remove it after bathing in lukewarm water for a few minutes and gently rubbing with a towel (or your hands if it's very small and you're gently).

If it's a normal scale I personally would not pull it off as if the skin broke you could possibly end up with a tiny wound susceptible to infection.. I'm sure someone else here has experienced this and will advise as to what they did..

ok i will take a closer look to see if it is just an old peice of skin, but im pretty sure she had a clean shed the last time. thanks

If it is, that's the best case scenario. Although I'm sure it will not harm her in any way if it is a 'new' scale. Fingers crossed.

It may be remnants of an old shed, but she may have somehow pulled a "current" scale up. Sometimes in their wanderings and explorations, snakes will catch a scale on something. If that's the case, just leave it be. Keep an eye on the area next shed, in any case.

If you're really concerned, you can put a tiny dab of A & D Ointment on the spot. That will provide some moisture as well as a modicum of a barrier to infection. I wouldn't mess with the scale too much, apart from putting some A & D on it. Most snakes are understandably sensitive about having their heads handled. There's no cause to stress anybody out.
