Scaleless Tessera Progression Thread - Ermengarde

SHE'S FINALLY HERE!!!!!

Okay, sorry for the shouting, I'm just very, very excited. An hour and a half ago my beautiful female scaleless tessera hatchling showed up and I couldn't be happier. She's bigger than I expected (definitely a plus), active, healthy and beautiful. She's very wriggly, but give she spent about 24 hours in transit, I'm not surprised! She's currently settling into her new home, but I managed to snap a pic before letting her into her new house.

I will update this, hopefully monthly, if I remember too.

And I know it's cliche, but the pic does not do her justice; she's more red than she appears here, and of course the intensity of the red is only likely to increase as she ages. If you want an idea of how much the camera is distorting the colour, my thumbnail you can see there isn't painted; it's pink, and yet it looks like I painted it blue.

Funnily, other scaleless tesseras I've seen have lacked the dorsal stripe - guess it's just variation in the tessera expression? Also, I adore the way she feels to the touch - very much like suede.

Oh Giga! She's absolutely beautiful. I'm so happy for you. :dancer:

I'm looking forward to more pics when she settles in. Have you got a name for her ?

I just noticed you have her name in the title! It's a lovely name. Please disregard my question. :)

Can't wait to see updates!! She's gorgeous!!! The only other scaleless tessera I've seen (Rich Hume's) did not have a dorsal stripe.

Yeah; just from Googling around (although there's not many pics to be found), it seems that most do not have the dorsal stripe, although I did find one other pic of a hatchling that did. I'm assuming that it's just variation in how the tessera allele is being expressed rather than anything else. She's het amel and ph caramel, but I can't imagine either of those playing a part? Fairly certain she's from a tessera x normal pairing so she's not super-tess.

Who knows, maybe she'll lose it as she ages anyway. I personally hope not though - I like the stripe! XD

Yes, ours has a partial stripe it came from Rich Hume as well.

Mine's not from Rich Hume (sorry, not sure if you thought mine was or you were just replying to Nanci), but it's good to hear that my girl's not a total weirdo and isn't the only one with a stripe XD

Teensy update...

I'm already seeing some differences between this little girl and my old boy; I hardly ever see Lovecraft out and about (yearly breeding system madness excepted), and he's been like that ever since he was little (granted I git him as a yearling) but Mini is active! She has been exploring her home all evening, going in and out of hides, climbing over foliage and generally nosing about. No pics as it was in half-light and I didn't want to startle her by turning the light on.

I take it as a good sign that she feels confident enough to leave her hides and look around, no? Resisting the temptation to get her out for some handling is hard but I'm being good!

Yeah, some of them just explore every inch the first few days. She'll settle down some but it's great she is so active and inquisitive!

Well, I am delighted to say that she's had her first meal!

My mind was running through all the various tricks and whatnot to get babies to eat, but in the end I went with the KISS (keep it simple, stupid) approach and did what I've always done for my older corn, popping mousey half into the hide she was presently occupying. Took her a couple of hours but I just went to check on her and she was halfway across her terrarium with a very gratifying lump in her belly! :D :D :D

She was probably feeling very hungry; hadn't eaten for 2.5 weeks as the breeder hadn't wanted her to travel on a full belly. To tell the truth I think the pinky looked a little small for her, and it was 'medium pinky' according to the shop. I don't think it'll be long at all before she's on fuzzies XD

My only complaint was that by the time I went back to grab my phone for pics, she had moved to one of the warm hides... Well at least she'll be digesting well XD I'll be doing some handling once she's had time to digest and will try to get pics, so stay tuned!

Well, had my friend the photography hobbyist round on Sunday, and he took a whole bunch of photos of my wriggly little worm. She was not exactly cooperative (she's still nervous about handling, but getting there), but he took so many photos that there were bound to be a few good ones. He's sent me these two for now and will send the rest once he's finished tidying them up.

Firstly, a close-up of her head. I only realised from looking at this picture that she actually has a single scale right on the tip of her nose; how cute is that!? Also, I find it interesting how the pattern on her head is mostly obfuscated by the glaring white of the skull underneath. And aren't her little brown eyes just darling? (biased.)

And then a shot of her belly, showing her lovely ventral pattern:
