Selling most of my snakes

Well, I've had to make a decision. I was excited, and still am, to get back into the corn thing and to be breeding this spring. However, school is a bit more important at the moment and it's turning out to eat up much more of my time than expected. The most responsible thing I can do is to take it easy with the snakes. You wouldn't think grad school would be so much work  It's certainly not just a 9-5 job most of the time. Plus, we do field work in Mexico and I could be spending up to 6-7 weeks a summer, a couple weeks each winter, and spring break down there for the next several years. I can't predict exactly how much I'll be gone, but will definitely be spending a fair amount of time away from home. I can't spend that much time away and have to rely on someone else to care for my snakes and the summer trips would be in the middle of breeding/hatching season. On top of that, there's just not time to take care of all those hathclings. I don't want my grades, research or teaching to suffer or to neglect my snakes as a result of spreading myself too thin. I'm still planning to keep at least my female granite for now...I can't get rid of ALL of them ;)

I'm going to be posting an add with the snakes that are available. Since, I'm not certified to ship, they will have to be available "locally" first. If possible, I may try to find someone who could ship them on my behalf to make them available to everyone.

Sad to hear of this Zach, but completely understandable. Just don't be a stranger here.

As an aside, I LOVE the tagline. It must go over well in your new state. ;)

regards,
jazz

A hard decision, but totally understandable. Hope your collection go to members here who'll post updates!

Thanks, Dale. It goes over well with my peers. As for my state? Well, I'm not ready to put a bumper sticker on my car advertising it :)

I live here in Houston Katy Texas I would like to know what you have for sell.:dancer:

I was just in Houston this past weekend. I flew back in from Illinois. Spent a small fortune parking at the airport...that's the real reason I have to sell my snakes :p BTW, the ad is up in the for sale section now.

Erf, I take it you're an ecologist?

I sympathize, being in grad school myself. MD/PhD :p But it's in biochem, so I'm pretty much chained at home!! I find my snakes are a nice mental break, but I know I'm reaching my cap at 20 animals
Good luck!!! You can always get back into it later :)

Wow this kinda made me think about my life a bit. I'm not to gradschool yet, but crap. Lol well sorry you had to make this decision, but it's understandable.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm still in a phase where I have a hard time putting a label on myself. Behavioral and molecular ecology is probably the closest description but my emphasis is on sexual selection and mate choice.

I didn't mean to alarm :) If you're considering grad school, definitely don't decide against it just based on something like this. I'm sure my case isn't necessarily the norm. I think Joe Cala might be in grad school and Silvergrin above and probably at least a few others and they are managing. If I absolutely wanted to make it work, I'm sure I could. With my situation, it will just work out for the best to focus on my future career rather than my current hobby. Even though my snakes are a hobby I also really do enjoy my work. A great thing about being a biologist (ecologist) is that it is like being paid to work on a hobby, so I prefer to devote as much of my time and effort towards it for the time being and focus on my true snake hobby in the future when I have grad student lackies of my own to do my work ;)

Congratulations on the career field you have chosen, its a great one to be in. I am sorry you will have to part ways with your snakes though. I hope they all go to great homes :)

Hey there Zach. sorry to hear about this, let me know what you have available too. and, if you need someone to ship for you, I am certified and will gladly help you out. Just let me know. hope that things settle down for you as soon as they can.

I live in College Station

I live in College Station, keep me posted with what you are thinking about getting rid of.

Thanks, Paul. I've got a thread up in the for sale section now with a list of what's available.

See above :D

Off topic, but, what are you researching down in Old Mexico?

Hey, that's always on-topic material as far as I'm concerned. We (Rosenthal lab at TAMU) do research on Mexican swordtails (similar to the pet store fish only wild ones). We work in an area where two different, but related, species hybridize. There's quite a bit of stuff going on in the lab regarding behavior, sensory ecology, etc. My research is focused on the genetics of mate choice and the evolution of female preferences and male traits. We go down to our field station several times a year to collect fish and run experiments.

Sweet stuff, I took an Ich class, but that was about all of my fish learnings, I could have done more here in Kingsville but the prof here could never get any fundings. He had some good potential projects here in the local bays, but no dinero.

no dinero.

So goes the story with many people in the life sciences...unfortunately. Funding's just not that great these days. I've got one grant submitted last semester and I'm working on two more right now.

Wow, on one hand I want to say "that sucks" but on the other hand I want to say congrats because you've found something so worth making yourself apart of.
I am sorry to hear that you have to part with your babies though, but it's quite admirable to have their best intrests at heart and I commend you for that.

If you find out someone will be able to ship for you, will you be keeping that updated as well?

Thanks! It is nice to enjoy what I'm doing. I will keep things updated. Technically, I guess I can already say that I've had at least two offers from people who could ship for me. I would prefer to hold out a day or two to try to give any local folks a chance just to cut down on the number I would have to ship to different places. Unless there's someone who wants the whole group shipped to them ;)

Awww Zach your such a swthrt & are headed in the right direction. Many prayers goin your way that all works out for the best for you & your little guys! Stay in touch! :)

Because a few folks had posted in this thread and might be checking back I wanted to say that I now CAN SHIP meaning the 7 snakes not on hold are not just available locally anymore.

Awe shucks...:) Thanks for the kind words. I probably will still be around from time to time. I'm sure most of my family won't care to see updates of Zephyr, my '06 Granite that I'm holding onto, so I'll have to have somewhere to share pics of her :D
