Sexing by the Tail?

I have done a search on the forums about how to best determine sex by looking at the tail. I know that it is not 100% accurate, but I'm curious. Sonya is about 8 months old and I just got her last night. The owners were unsure of the sex, but I would like to try to determine it. Getting a snake probed here is awfully expensive, and being that she is only 8 months, I'm not TOO concerned, mostly curious. I would like to possibly breed it some day, but for now she's just my adorable new addition.

Anyways, here are some pics of her... Your best guess would be much appreciated. :)

Thank you.

My guess would be a male too, simply because from the corn snakes I've seen, the females have shorter tales and bulkier vent areas. But it varies too much from snake to snake to be sure.

I'm going to agree and just say that it looks like my male Tobias's tail so... male!
Of course like has been stated, this isn't accurate!

Nice snake though!

Thank you all so much! And here I had a nice female name picked out, lol.
Anyone else want to venture a guess?

well if thats a Male that means mine's a Female, an i've called her Elwood. I may have to start an think about changing that :s

There's no telling any of us are right... It's just a guess....
Hell I could of guessed without seeing the pic and had a 50/50 chance.... LOL

My guess would be male, as well. That was my first thought on seeing the pictures. However I'm not very experienced, so like everybody else said, it's just a guess.

I know that it's just a guess... I've spent a lot of time looking at sexing pictures and I'm swaying over to the "it's a male" side as well...
I was merely looking for opinions. :)

The best thing to do is have it probed.... If it's too expensive, either learn to do it, or send out a 'tinterweb appeal for help......
Ryanr is in Canada, and he likes meeting ladies... LOL

Yea, I phoned around and the cheapest I can find for probing is about 150$. :S It would be really awesome if someone locally knew how to do that. :)

I'm in Manitoba, lol.
There is a forum for manitoba herps. but there isn't too much activity going on there.

$150 to have him/her probed?!? That's outrageous!!!! I show people for free. Are there any shows or other herp people in your area that could help you out?

As for your OP, if I had to guess, I'd say male as well. But really that's just a 50/50 guess. I have plenty of females who have "male tails" and males with "female tails". There's so much variation, that I put no stock into sexing just by looking.

Yea, it's pretty crazy. There is a show coming up in July I believe, but not sure if there is someone who could show me. Perhaps I will try asking on a local forum if someone can do probing.
I appreciate the advice. Thank you. :)

I'm sure there's someone at the show that could show you. You might try and get the vendor list and contact a couple of them and ask. That's what I did when I wanted to learn how to do it.
