Sexing hatchlings

If a hatchling/young corn is probed by an experienced "expert" will the sex be for certain? If not, when are they old enough to be completely sure?

if it is probed by an "experienced" person than yes it is certain. it pretty much depends on how "experienced" the person is though.

it is always good to double check though.

people do make mistakes. it is more likely that a person can mistake a female for actualy being a male. since the probe goes in much deeper with a male it is hard to mistake. when probing females the person may have not inserted the probe properly and it can actually be a male. the probe will only be able to penetrate a small amount into the cloaca with females and male it can be inserted much farther.

hope that helps!

I have had some very experienced people mistake a male for a female on more than one occasion. For the most part probing is a very good indicator but if they are popped as hatchlings and the person knows the difference between a hemipenis and a scent gland then it is a sure thing

How difficult is it to pop a hatchling? I've studied enough pictures to tell the difference between the two, but I've never worked up enough courage to try popping them for the first time by myself. I've read the procedures and viewed the illustrations and pictures, but I'd really hate to hurt any snakes in an attempt to determine their gender. My two adults I took to the store I bought them at after they were several months old and the guy there just looked at the tails and told me correctly. Might have been blind luck or experience for all I know, but he was correct.

You really need to be shown how to pop.

Sexing adults by their tail, while not 100%, is pretty darn close.

Are you experienced in that? I'd be curious to see if the sex of the snakes I bought from Bay Area Reptile are even correct, not to mention the other wee ones that just hatched.

I can probe, but I'm not really comfortable doing so on hatchlings. If you give me a few weeks I'll be able to show you how to pop though.
