Sexing?

amanda007

Read, read, read!
I just got a snow that is about 11 weeks who wasn't sexed by the breeder. (She is local, but sells them to the pet store she works at). I watched Kathy Love's video on popping, and tried to pop my snake this evening before I fed him/her. I rolled my thumb just like she shows from a few different spots on the tail, and the only thing that happened was the vent opening up a tiny bit like her female did in the video.

When we first got the snake, I was convinced it was a male because of the length of it's tail. But on further inspection, there is a sharp difference in sizes between the end of the body and the beginning of the tail. I have read that this usually indicates a female.

Now I've never popped a snake before, so I am not 100% sure I'm doing it right. I mean, the vent did peek open, and I could see a little bit of flesh bulging out, just like the video. Do y'all think I was doing it correctly? There is a herp vet downtown I can take him/her to eventually. I was just hoping to pop out a hemepenes and be assured it was a male. But if I popped her right, then it's a she, and my snake needs a new name!

I think you should bring him/her to the herp vet to get it sexed. I wouldn't recommend trying to pop your snake yourself because you can do damage to the reproduction organs if you do something wrong, especially being that you've never popped a snake before. I would wait, and have it done correctly for both your sake and your snake's! :)

If you can find someone experience nearby that knows how to sex that would be preferred. Herp vets often charge an arm and a leg just to sex.

And they normally want dinner beforehand too...

Lol.

I must admit I was afraid that it would cost a fortune. I might try getting a hold of the actual breeder to see if she can sex him/her for me, but the people at the pet shop tried telling me that the snake was "too young" to sex. Which is ridiculous, since, as I understand it, you can pretty much sex them from the day they hatch.

Babies are easier to sex than adults I think.

You're best off finding someone to actually show you how to pop them who is willing to work with you in person.

Oh, another question:

I read a few articles suggesting that, with pale snakes, you can shine a bright light on the side of their tail and to look for the respective male/female parts. Had anyone had any success with this method? I have a very pale snow (starting to think it might be a coral, really, but only time will tell!), and if this method can work, I'd like to try it.
