Shedding Problems?

So, I got my first corn snake (ever) today. It's my first snake in about 10 years (last one was a very mean red tailed boa constrictor). It's a creamsicle about a foot long or so. Got him/her home today and when I picked him up, I noticed it looks like it hasn't finished its last shed. Eyes and everything are clear, but it looks like their is still a bit of shed on its tail left over. I did some research, and the common suggestion seems to be that I should let him/her hang out in a container of water (I'm using a shoebox with little holes in the top/high sides) with a washcloth on the bottom and just enough water to create a small layer of water but not so he/she has to swim. The water is room temperature. I read you should leave them in for about 20 minutes or so. Is this the right thing to do? Is there anything else I can do to help him/her lose that last bit of shed quick? Thank you so much for all your help, and I'm sure I'll have more questions as we go along, but this is all for now. Much appreciated!

There is a sticky at the top of this section which covers what to do! But yes, soaking is the right thing to do.

this is the best photo I can get of him sorry

awe.. poor Guy/girl.. :( their lucky to have found you!

as for the tail tip... I haven't delt with this before, but from what I can see it doesn't look too dark, you may of just saved it, but I wouldn't touch it or handle him for a little while, as he has just came home, I would recommended leaving him/her be for a week.. then you can try feeding them. :)

I hope the tail tip heals, but if it doesn't, and it dose happen to fall off. don't worry or blame yourself, you have done as much as you could have so far. just keep an eye on it..so no infection sets in

best wishes to you and your new friend!

It's much darker this morning, I think I was too late. I wish I'd been able to get my hands on him earlier. Though, I hadn't been planning on getting a snake for another month or so. I've been buying the set up bit by bit as paychecks come in (though it's now complete, just a bit bare) then I went to a different store to get a better hide, and I see their corn snakes. One of them looked almost like a cat had gotten a hold of it or something because it had a giant deep cut down its side. I believe that one was a lavender. I couldn't pick him up then for lack of funds, but I borrowed some cash and was able to get him/her the next day. So, now he's here resting up in his new home. I'm going to take him to get sexed probably next week so I can find an appropriate name for him/her. I've mainly been leaving him/her alone, but I do pull it out for a minute or two every day so I can check on the tail since he likes to burrow down under the bedding
