Shedding Question

Based on your experiences.... once your juvy corns eyes turn blue how long does it usually take them to shed. Also will they eat durring this period thanks!

It take about 7-10 days start to finish. I think when my hatchlings eyes went opec, it took about 4 days before she finished. But every snake is different.. Mine started with her shed on Aug 1 and finished Aug 11.

Some hatchlings will eat, some don't. Mine didn't she just hid the whole time til she was done.

You can try feeding and see if you hatchling takes food. If it does not feed, its nothing to worry about.

The entire process or the actual removal of the skin???

Once the eyes go blue, the snake will stay dull and milky looking for a few day before clearing back up. After the blue phase, the snake will usually start to shed in another 1-3 days. Once it starts, the actual act of shedding the skin will only take a few minutes.

My corn Panther sheds on a strict schedule every time. He'll turn blue, go clear exactly 3 days later, then shed exactly 2 days after that. I always put a moist hide in his viv while he's in shed (just a small tupperware container with a wet paper towel inside) and I mist the tank a little on the last day. So far every shed has been perfect. Unfortunately, I've never actually seen him in the process of shedding, because he always does it when I'm alseep...

shedding/eating

I have a 3 mo. old Okeetee from Kathy Love. He is in the middle of shed phase (his first shed with me, I assume his second shed). He just went back to clear. What is odd is that shedding has actually mellowed him a bit. He hasn't tried to strike at all during the shedding process and he was a bit nippy a few weeks ago. Kathy's Okeetees are great eaters. I've heard this from other customers and Kathy herself. My snake is the same, a real pig. Just before he went into shed he ate two pinkies at meal time for the first time - and ate them quickly. I then noticed that he was in shed and that he became reclusive. So, I was curious too as to whether he would eat. I decided to feed on schedule and see what would happen, even though he was completely in the blue phase - with impaired vision etc. He was not as eager to eat at first. I could tell by his behavior that he was somewhat indecisive. I tried to lower him into his feeding container and he tried to quickly exit despite having smelled the pinkies. Finally, he remained in the feeding container and I took a few steps back to get out of his sight (that seems to relax him a bit and speed up his feeding - which was always REALLY fast - like under 2 minutes from smell to swallow). Well, he ate one pinkie, then smelled the other one and decided not to eat it. My conclusion (based on this one experience), IMHO the hormones of shedding definitely affect appetite. Some really strong eaters, like my snake, will eat anyway. But it wouldn't surprise me if many corns with a weaker feeding response would not eat at all. I am going to feed my snake two pinkies after he actually sheds, and I'll bet we are back to normal.

About the same here as the others...

My snake, Ren, seems to follow the basic "rule of shedding" as do the other members on this post. I notice Ren gets a little dull in color...within 2-3 days eyes are blue and hazey and 2-3 days later shed occurs. (As for age, I have no idea how old Ren is but s/he sheds every month)

A Little Question!

Hi, I've just bought a new corn snake and was wondering about it. It's about a month after its first shed (after in had hatched) and I have just noticed some skin starting to peel off at the top of it's head. Is this normal for it to happen this fast. It's eye's haven't gone cloudy although it's skin looks slightly duller, it's an amelanistic so will its eyes go as blue as a normal corn snake? :shrugs:

No the eyes don't go as milky, I also have an amel and the eyes tend to just look a bit dry. But it sure sounds like a shed...
