shedding/eating
I have a 3 mo. old Okeetee from Kathy Love. He is in the middle of shed phase (his first shed with me, I assume his second shed). He just went back to clear. What is odd is that shedding has actually mellowed him a bit. He hasn't tried to strike at all during the shedding process and he was a bit nippy a few weeks ago. Kathy's Okeetees are great eaters. I've heard this from other customers and Kathy herself. My snake is the same, a real pig. Just before he went into shed he ate two pinkies at meal time for the first time - and ate them quickly. I then noticed that he was in shed and that he became reclusive. So, I was curious too as to whether he would eat. I decided to feed on schedule and see what would happen, even though he was completely in the blue phase - with impaired vision etc. He was not as eager to eat at first. I could tell by his behavior that he was somewhat indecisive. I tried to lower him into his feeding container and he tried to quickly exit despite having smelled the pinkies. Finally, he remained in the feeding container and I took a few steps back to get out of his sight (that seems to relax him a bit and speed up his feeding - which was always REALLY fast - like under 2 minutes from smell to swallow). Well, he ate one pinkie, then smelled the other one and decided not to eat it. My conclusion (based on this one experience), IMHO the hormones of shedding definitely affect appetite. Some really strong eaters, like my snake, will eat anyway. But it wouldn't surprise me if many corns with a weaker feeding response would not eat at all. I am going to feed my snake two pinkies after he actually sheds, and I'll bet we are back to normal.
