shedding

my little corn snake has started shedding with me for the first time and i am wondering about a few things.

if i need to raise the humidity in the vivarium would putting a water bowl over the hot side help? or just spray the sides of the vivarium with water.

also how many days after it sheds should i try feed it?

Adding a water bowl over to the hot side will raise humidity, but you'll have to remember to keep on eye on it so there is always water available for your snake to drink. If you have an extra container you don't mind cutting (killing), you could make a humid hide. Basically, you get a container with a lid, cut a smooth hole in it for the snake to get into, add a moist substrate like moss, and make sure it stays moist.

If you do a search, you can find all sorts that people use. Hope this helps.

You can try feeding it the day after shedding. And you can add a humid hide filled with sphagnum moss or coco fiber. This should aid in the skin coming off :)

It's actually probably best advised to leave the snake to its own devices this first time and find out if it needs help shedding, before you go about increasing the humidity. Most of the time, most people find their snakes don't need any help at all. I've had 3 or 4 bad sheds in 11 years.

how long after the blue eyes disappear should i expect the snake to shed? the blue eyes went around 2 days ago and all iv seen it do is sit in its coconut doing nothing all day long.

also my snake is nearly a year old and weighs in at 12grams (which i pressume is small as everyone has said so). but am i right in saying that if it is shedding it means it is healthy and the size of it is not effecting its health?

thanks

He should shed within 12-48 hours of his eyes turning clear.

12 grams is miniscule for a near-yearling. How long have you had him? He ought to be shedding once a month if he is growing at a healthy rate. Shedding can also indicate weight loss.

i bought it in may and the reptile shop said he was born in september 09, and had a consitent feeding record for the snake.

the snake has been eating 1 pinky every 7 days (has ate 2 pinkies on 2 occasions and all other times it refuses the 2nd one).

iv taken it to a reptile rescue centre who said it is very small for its age but is fiesty and seems healthy so i was happy with what they said.

this is also the first time it has shed with me (well in process of shedding).

should i be worried with its slow growth rate?

I'd be quite concerned. I would probably be feeding him every five days, and slitting the pinks. He's too small for double pinks unless they are tiny day-olds.

yer i end up slitting the pinkys anyway but whenever i put it in with a pinky 5 days after the last feed it wont eat it but 7 days after it will.

and yer i slit the pinkys anyway. guess ill give it a day or two to shed then start trying to feed it every 5 days
