Shedding

Lexus

The Lioness
I was under the impression the shedding process was long, around a few weeks, and there are signs before the prcoess such as a temporary bluing of the eyes, etc.

I once suspected my snakew wqas in pre-shed because it had mild fog to her eyes but it was gone in an hour.

She had no flakes coming off or any peeling.
I handeled her yesterday and placed her back in the tank. Between 0100 and 1200 she completely shed her body of old skin in one run. Does it happen this fast?

When she had the cloudy eyes that was most likely the end of her blue phase and her eye caps came off shortly after that. You don't want flakes or any peeling when she's going into shed that means she's going to have an incomplete shed and your humidity is off and it can become rather irritating for the snake if it doesn't come off easily in one piece. Once they start to shed it doesn't take very long maybe thirty minutes at most if it's a good shed. A typical cycle is anywhere from 3-7 days in blue and then anywhere after that it can be from 3-9 days before the shed happens. It just depends on the snake some shed fast and others take their time. Mine usually takes around ten to twelve days to go through shedding behavior with no problems.

Somehow I had it backwards in my head. Good to know, that must mean the humidity and moss box I gave her did right.

Now you don't handle them too much afterwards because they are tender, correct?

Say, while you're answering questions about shedding, I'm going to sneak in really quick with another question: How soon after they've shed should you feed them?

I usually take 24 hours of minimal holding for mine after a shed because the new skin is more sensitive for a period of time. I usually feed the following day after a shed, it takes a lot of energy for a shed and they're usually very hungry afterwards.
