rocky my 1st corn snake appears to have started his 1st shed since i have had him....

i looked in his viv and he was crawling round brushing against anything he possibly could...
i have moved his water bowl closes to the heated area to make it a bit more moist in the air
any ideas what i could do to help him out with this or shall i just leave him to it ?
at the moment he appears to just have old skin off his head sorted folded back against his head

how long will this process take ?

thanks
adam and rocky

just leave him to it, it shouldn't tke long. If there are any bits left on him, especially the tail tip, after couple of hours, try the 'snake-o-bath' A wet flannel in a sandwich box works wonders

would u suggest putting his waterbowl back to its orginal place then ?
he appears to have stopped moving round and brushing on everything now i guess he needs a bit of a rest.....is that normal?

Mine started to shed but only got rid of a third of it. Humidty was 65% and I'd sprayed him a few times but he was really struggling.

I got a sandwich box with some tepid water in (just an inch or so) and put him in that for 15 mins and punched some air holes in. When I took the lid off he slid off leaving all the rest of skin behind really easily.

if he needed to go in water thoe to get it off i would have thought we would of just used his water bowl...

i think for the minute im just gonna give him a few hours to do it himself

if there isnt a skin everywhere tomorow morning then i might think about helping him out

the only problem is he only fed last night so i dont want to handle him if possible till atleast tomorow night

I used the wet flannel because mine got too stressed being put into water. You could put a humid hide in for tonight, just put wet kitchen roll or something in a tupperware/

could i just put a peice of damp kitchen role in his viv and see if he uses it ?there is no chance he could be harmed from this is there?

Relax! Most snakes shed perfectly most of the time.
When yours has finished, check the shed skin to see if the eyecaps are there, and the very tip of the tail. A build-up of unshed skin on the eyes can lead to infecion. An unshed tail tip can cut off circulation and cause the end to die and drop off. If there are problems then you can certainly help them out easily.
a humid hide could help if your snake wants to use it.

yeah im going to give him more time to do it himself then if there is no signs of him doing by late tonight ill help him....

ive already see the head part of the skin come off and that deffinatley had the eye caps in becuase i was thinking how weird it looked

I wouldn't put the kitchen towel in there on its own, just place some damp kitchen towell in an old small plastic style sandwich box, margerine tub or similar, cut a small hole (about an inch dia.) in the top and leave it in there overnight as mentioned on previous threads. Hopefully it will all be completed by morning.
We were lucky enough to watch the whole process with 'Pebbles' but you do feel that you want to give them a hand sometimes.

Good luck!!!

The whole process should only take a few minutes- like less than 30. By the time he is actually taking his skin off it's too late for increasing the humidity- that is for while he is in the blue stage.

I watched a snake shed last Saturday at the serpentarium- he had a tiny water bowl, and he was a huge snake, but after he had his skin peeled back about a third of the way, he became determined to run his whole body through the water bowl. It was funny- he could just do a little section at a time. His shed broke off with about a fifth of it left, but he later peeled that off. This all happened in about 15 minutes.

hmmm im starting to be a bit worried now as he had only shedded like the bit over his head.... and hes been doing it like since i started this thread.....

i put a box in his cage with a damp paper towel in and hes not been in there yet at the moment he is curled up under his log

he ate yesterday thoe and i dont want to risk a regurge when he is this young

im gonna leave him to it and if it gets not better by this time tommorow i will buy some spray for him

Once he has digested properly, and still hasn't shed you could try and hold him in a damp facecloth and let him move through it, if like you said he has started to shed then going through the cloth should remove the remaining shed. Just make sure the temp of the cloth is around room temp.

Good Luck.

i was still worried this morning so i brought some of the t- rex spray from my local petstore and gave him a spray with that...

he did not like being sprayed initialy but now hes crawling around and rubbing on everything again....hope fully this will do the trick

Do any of you use this spray is it effective?

I've heard that it's pretty much worthless. You'd do better to put him in the snake-o-bath Janine suggested.

i put him in a tub with a small amount of water last night and sorta let him soke for 15 mins and when he can out he was crawling about all over the places tryeding to find somthing to squeeze through until his skin came off....

in the end it came down to teamwork he kept squeezing round his water bowl but the gap wasnt quite tight enuff... so i pucshed the bowl a bit closer to the edge of his viv when he moved away and then he came back and has another go and finaly it worked....

i believe the end part of his tail is still on thoe so we shall have to try and resolve that today

any good ideas how to do this ?

Take a piece of moistened paper tail and gently pull the tail tip through it.

Hold the snake in one hand, the paper towl in the other, and wrap the paper towel around the tip of the tail and gently but firmly rub until it comes off.

It's best to use white paper towels so you can see the skin when it comes off...
