How does one start the process of being able to ship snakes? I would imagine you have to complete some sort of paperwork or can any ordinary Joe do it? I'm a newbie when it comes to snakes so my snake-breeding days are far in the future but I'm totally hooked and am already planning on where I can fit more snakes, so I'm guessing my obsession will only grow from here.

Do a search for FedEx. There've been a few threads lately that will give you a sense for how to do it and for how much time you might need to set aside for it.

After reading some of those threads, sounds like a real headache!

Actually no.

Go to www.fedex.com and open an account. Wait a few days and package up your 'test' package and ship it out using the form that's linked all over those threads.

When you get it back approved from design and testing, you need to call your local rep whose number is listen on the form. That's the most challenging part---but if you can get in touch with your rep it only takes about a week.

The part between the package test approval and final paperwork took me about 2 months. I did it around April-May this year.

The first month was spent finding an actual person who would talk to me. There was a lot of phone tag playing where noone would give me info because they had no idea Fedex could ship reptiles legally. Also my Representative would only give out her voice mail #. (she NEVER called me back)
Finally after the second month I went straight to the legal department and they finally gave me an actual phone # for my Rep.

That was the only hard part. Everything else went smooth as silk, especially the package design part. The people at the package testing department are very helpful, prompt, and understanding. I think they are the only ones who really know what's going on.

I've been at this since April and my account rep had only just turned in the paperwork to legal. He's had it for a month, but he also only handles very large accounts and kinda took me on as a challenge. He's been pleasant to deal with and I wasn't in a hurry, so I've been patient. My package was approved in April within two weeks. In this game, patience is a virtue.

Joe, I'm glad they accepted a faxed signature. I had to sign three copies of the contract. If I'd known then that I could fax this stuff, I would have done that eons ago!

i wonder can you ship by just bringing in a box labled live harmless reptile with the latin name on it and the common name and just bring it in to the local fedex store thing and ship them that way, i have never shipped animals so im just wondering....

I got mine going in April and all I need now is the waiver from legal (since May!). But my rep is ignoring my emails, its been months! So it can be a pain and hopefully I will figure out whats going on with my account, its frustrating...

Brock : (800) 448-9961 x0367

Tell him that Joe talked to him earlier in the week and that I gave you his contact info like he said I could. Tell him what problems you are having and he should be able to help you. Apparently getting the waivers is rather simple, you just need a rep that knows what to do.

Or you can contact Rod Coffman. Don't know his phone number, but if you call the 800 without the extension you can just say his name. Both Brock and Rod know what to do.

Absolutely NOT!
No live animals without a contract. I had a breeder sell me a Tegu and cornsnakes and he said he was certified. When I didn't receive the package I called Fedex. After talking to them for almost an hour I learned that he didn't, they let me off the hook because I was not responsible.

They kept the reptiles as proof and sought legal action for a $2500 fine. The amount, they told me, came from a combination of Fedex fines, mail fraud fines, and State and local fines.

Needless to say I didn't get my animals and it took almost 4 months to get my refund because the guy had to wait until the reptiles were returned to him from Fedex.

Because it is a legal contract, I think you have to be 18 to sign it. I'm not sure if parental consent counts, or not.

Some interesting and helpful stories. I'll be sure to get everything in order before I actually breed anything.

Just a tip. You might want to get with your rep first. He can pay for the shipping and return of your test package so that there is no out of pocket cost to you. They will use their shipping code.
