Shredded vs regular Aspen bedding

I am using shredded aspen bedding that was in the reptile section at the local petsmart. But I noticed in the small animal section aspen bedding in a much larger bag for less money but it wasn't shredded. So I was just wondering if the other kind can be used for corn snakes or should I just stick with the shredded kind?

Thanks!

April

It's the same stuff they just put it in a bag with a picture of a snake and charge you twice as much. :sidestep: Aspen is aspen and it doesn't really matter what kind you use (small shreds, big shreds, chips...) - it's just a personal preference.

I've used shredded (Harlan), chips (Nepco and Harlan) and shavings (Nepco and Kaytee).

The snakes seem to burrow more in the shredded or shavings, the chips just collapse on them and don't make for very good burrowing tunnels.

I'd definitely go for the cheaper larger bag. No need for reptile-specific labeling.

Thanks for the help. I'll be getting the bigger bag when I need to buy more. Just wanted to make sure, don't want to do anything that'll harm my new guy.

Thanks!

Just watch where you get the bigger bags. I got a bag of the larger aspen from the local Tractor Supply store in the pet section and it ended up having mites. If it hadn't been for the mites thought, that bag was really packed and would have lasted a long time. I plan on getting that from the pet store when I go back off the paper towels.

That's one of the nice things about nice cold winters, I would leave any bedding in my car for a week or so to make sure it was well frozen and any possible mites killed off.
Going to have to be more careful now that it's warmer,

I would recommend the Kaytee brand. It's kiln baked and free of any aromatic oils. Also, I've never come across mites. A bonus is that it only costs $10.99 for a bag that expands to 52 cubic feet!!! :bang:
