Shy Eater

I have a Flourescent Orange CS that's about 7 months old now. He's a VERY picky eater, only wanting live prey. I feed him once a week with a live 5-6 day old pinky. The only way I can get him to eat is to feed him in a paper bag and with the lights out. Usually he'll take it within a hours time given that set up.

Now, last weekend my son bought an Anery Striped/Motley CS that's only about 2 mos old. On day two we decided to feed it a 1-2 day old pinky. My son wanted to see it eat and placed the snake in a Sterilite shoe box with the pinky and within less than 30 second bee-lined from the opposite side of the box to the prey and nailed it with all of us watching.

My questions:

  • Why do some eat so openly while others are so finicky?

Will my snake ever learn to eat "normally" or will it always require me to feed it this way?

I have a little snow who was the same way. She had been fed only live before I got her, even with them she needed to be put in a small container in the dark to eat. I decided she needed to learn to eat F/T so I started offering only f/t.

I would slit the mouse first then put her in the deli cup with it and cover her with a towel, if she didn't eat in 2 hours I would put her back in her cage and try again in 4 days. After a couple tries she started eating, you have to be persistant in only offering f/t.

Now she will eat in a tub in front of me and is starting to grow well. I also think it helped that I handle her often, she knows I'm not going to hurt her.

I don't think there's necessarily a "normal" way that a snake eats. Each of them are different and thus feed differently. My classic corn is like your new one, goes straight for his prey everytime, and even constricts his f/t's. My amel on the other hand has to be fed in a quiet, dark place or he'll get scared and refuse to eat. Consequently he HAS been growing slower than the classic because he has refused more feedings. However i dont think there's much you can do to change this. It's your snake's personality, just how it is.

Though you can try feeding brained or slitted f/t's, but I'm not sure if it'll make much difference with your picky eater.

It seems like I hardly ever hear of normal/classic corns being very picky eaters, it always seems like its other morphs that have the feeding problems. My normal is a great eater and doesn't mind if I watch or move things around as he eats.
