Simple Green?

I went to tthe pet store today to get a cleaning solution to clean the tank, but the lady said that simple green works better and is cheaper as well. She said to mix half and half water to clean the tank. She also said that you could spray it while the snake was in the cage. I tried cleaning with it today, but while my snake was eating. Has anyone else used simple green so that i know that it is safe and effective?

Yes, simple green is very safe, but I would advise against using it to clean your cage while your snake is still in it. If you just need to spot clean, maybe you could spray it on a cloth, or paper towel first, instead of directly into the tank. Honestly, I've accidentally inhaled that stuff many times at work, and it makes me cough like crazy. Even though it may be safe to use in your snake tank, I doubt your snake would want to inhale it.

Alrighty perfect, that is what i thought, it didnt make too much sense to do it while my snake was in his tank, but thank you for verifying and dening what she said, that is exactly what i wanted to know.

Simple Green is also non toxic. My mother dotes on it, and she is usually quite paranoid with her cleaning supplies/things like that. (Ya know how moms are  )
I personally use Simple Green for anything that requires any type of cleaner.. that said I've never used SG to clean a viv before.

Hmm. I was gonna reply to this thread and say "Simple Green? Are you crazy?". But I looked up the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) and it looks pretty benign. A little bit of VOC's but that's it. The worst that could happen is you get some reddening on your skin, or an irritated nose/throat. That, and it notes a strong sasafras odor.

i only used it once to clean a used tank... so needless to say, no snake in the tank while cleaning. LOL...My husband uses it to clean his engine. :)

So guys and gals ... what is an inexpensive alternative? Vinegar and warm water? Diluted dish soap and water? What else?

I found out that ifyou dampen the cage, sprinkle in some baking soda and rub it around with a paper towel it takes off the deposits (I do use glass tanks though). Then, for fun, I pour in cheap white vinegar and watch it fizz away! Eliminates any odor too :) Although, I've found since raising my own mice that the snakes don't smell nearly as bad as when I was buying the mice from a pet store :shrugs:

I have most of my collection in tubs (the large, long, underbed roller type) so as they're just plastic, they get tossed in the bath tub and hosed with water as hot as I can handle and then scrubbed out with dish detergent. Once in a while I use a household detergent/cleaner and then give it an extra good rinse before drying it and returning the snake. It works well for me.
