slate tile for a corn?

So I have a leopard gecko and alot of people use slate tile for the bottom of their vivs.

I am planning on getting a big 40 for my new baby corn in a couple weeks/months when I get the funds for it and the heating and what not for it, Since i am a highschool student and on a minimum wage job I dont want to spend a ton of money on bedding each month for a 40, so what I was thinking was I could use slate in my viv, will this work for snakes or as anyone in here tried it, otherwise I might just go with aspen bedding and try to buy it wholesale or something so I can get alot at one time for a cheaper price.

thanks for any help...

I never used anything like that. I use aspen. It isn't that expensive if you buy the big bags at a feed store. I think I pay around $10 - $12 for a big bag that would last you quite a while. You only have to spot clean it. If you carefully scoop out all of the dirty stuff frequently, you won't have to completely change it very often.

I never thought about the feed store lol, I guess I will go price that stuff in a few weeks once I get this big 40 for my guy/gal.

thanks guys.

Snakes love to burrow. Aspen is a thousand times easier to clean than slate. It's not like you remove all the aspen when you want to clean, just pick out the poo. Which is nearly impossible to find from a baby.

the little guy/girl I have is on aspen rihgt now, and I dont have a problem seeing its poo at all on it... Im just ready for him/her to get big, and I need to get my brother to pop it sometime cause he knows how to do that and he sexed all of his snake that way and what not...

I use astro turf for mine -

I have two pieces cut to size and when one gets soiled I just take it out and replace it with the clean piece. Wash the dirty piece and have it ready for the next time you need changing.

I can't find Aspen anywhere near me or I would try it. But of all my choices this seems to be the best and works well for me, for one snake anyway - I can't imagine having to wash 30 or 50 pieces of astro turf. (also its a once of cost)

I was pleasantly surprised when I got my first corn at how long the bag of bedding lasts. I've had mice, guinea pigs, gerbils, and rabbits for whom I've bought bedding. Heck, there's kitty litter for the kitty, too. The snakes are the easiest to care for and keep clean, hands down - or, no hands down, if you prefer. :sidestep:

Also, if you put a hatchling into a 40 gallon tank...make sure there are a lot of small hides so it feels secure. Open spaces stress snakes out. In the wild they like to hide from predators, so a big open tank would make them feel very insecure.

if I get a 40 im def waiting befor I put it in, im gonna make sure I have hides everywhere for it, and just take a few out as it gets older, until I find out which 2-4 are its favorites and get bigger sizes of them and what not.
