Snake-sitting

DinoNeill

Must learn Parseltongue!
Well my semester is almost over and I've got it all set up to leave my corn with a local pet store to "snake-sit" for the holidays (don't want to take her home (2.5 hours away) in this cold weather). I'm a little nervous because this is the first time I left her in the care of someone else...anyone else have snake-sitters? I wonder what adventures she'll have all by herself...maybe sneak into the mice cages. XD

I'd take her home. 2.5 hours in a heated car, possibly with supplemental chemical heat packs, wouldn't be a problem. Let's hope she doesn't catch anything at the petstore (e.g. mites, r.i.). Did I mention that I'm a paranoiac? :)

Sorry 'bout this but I don't understand. WHY would you give your snake to someone else? Snake sit? Well, mine just sit in rubbermaids and need no particular attention per se. Change of water maybe? I don't even have to be there essentially for months, other then water changes and the occasional substrate replacement. Please explain. Thanks! :)

bunch of snakes 1.1.1.2.2.2.3333. whatever. Seriously, I got 6 adult snakes and some babies.

My biggest concern is that some unknowing employee would sell it. That's what pet stores do.

I would take it home, if your family will allow it.

yipes, well I know the owners quite well and they took care of someone else's snakes for a while and that worked out fine (the co-owner has her own snakes at home so she knows what to do)...they don't really have any other reptiles in the store, so I can't see her catching anything...and I've heard traveling with reptiles should be limited because it stresses them out...if that's not true then I spose I could take her home :/ (Plus I was hoping to do some shopping on the way home which I wouldn't be able to if she's with me)

My vote would be yes, take the snake home. I wouldn't let a pet store "sit" my snake for reason stated above. If your are comforable with the temptures in the car the snake should be too. Better than the pet store.

WHAT are you talking about?!!!!! Why is your snake gonna be in your car? IT should be in a heated container in your house, period. What the hell are you talking about? Please respond to my initial post so I can grasp where you come from- please.

Uh, did you read the first post? DinoNeill is going home from college for the Christmas holidays and doesn't want to leave the snake unattended in the dorm/apartment.

Personally, I'd take the snake home with me and drive back to wherever you want to do this shopping. I sure wouldn't trust one of the pet stores around here to snake sit. I might not have a snake when I got back.

- YES, I read it. Did you? That's why I posted about it. "Uh", use heat tape and a bowl of water? Personally, I don't need to attend to my snakes for very long, just a spot clean now and then, and a cleanout/substrate replacement with bleach solution about monthly. What do YOU do? Unattended? The occasional handling. That's the life of MY snakes!! They seem to like it that way. Sorry. I don't need a baby sitter for them lol.

Are you a 'tard, or are you just incapable of grasping the English language enough to understand the content/context of the post?

Christmas holidays for most college and universites are a month or more. Personally, I'm done the week of the 16th and don't have to be back until Jan 9th. Many of my snakes are going home with me, because, UH, DUH, heat tape and water doesn't sustain hatchlings for a 3/4 week period....duh!

Why in the hell are you talking about heat tape, water changing, substrate cleaning and handling in your post? Seriously.....do you not understand the post at all, or what? Maybe you were inebriated when you posted...I'm just not sure. Your posts on the subject make ZERO sense if the original post is read correctly.

She is having someone snake sit for the holiday period because she will be unable to, uh, DUH, change the water, spot clean/clean with a bleach solution or occasionally handle the snake.

Got it?

Good.

Wow, your snakes can go unattended for MONTHS at a time? Phew. I wish I could get those types of snakes, you know, the ones that don't need to eat to stay alive.

I suppose it depends on how long DinoNeill will be gone. It's better to feel secure knowing someone will be be able to give them water as they need it rather than coming home two/three weeks later to a dehydrated snake, or worse, find out that someone took your pet or did something to it while you were away. People can be stupid when they think they can get away with something.

If DinoNeill feels good about these people caring for your snake and trusts them then I say leave the snake with them, don't worry about the stress of transporting your animal and shop til you drop. It sounds like you know them pretty well, they have their own reptiles and they've done this sort of thing for other customers. When you get your snake back I would do a thorough exam for mites and maybe take in a fecal sample just to be safe.

I don't know of many places who board reptiles except one vet near me, but I can't see dropping off 64 snakes at once!

^ I guess I just am too stupid, college student. But at least I wasn't personally critical. I was just saying there's no need to store your pet- move it and stress it out- to a stranger. Get a friend to drop in a pinky once a week and change the water. Duh?

^ Heat tape and water and food weekly is all that is generally needed to maintain a baby or adult snake, isn't it, genius?

^ I read the original post correctly, Einstein. Those topics I mentioned are the essential needs of any snake, which seems to be overlooked sometimes. I just don't like the concept of handing over ANY snake of mine- even for a month- to a pet store, when a friend can EASILY take care of it for me. So sue me.
Please don't insult me by calling me a "tard", and "inebriated". I've done no harm to you.

^Y'know, you just sound silly.

^Ok, NOW you're being a typical a hole. Critical, accusatory and stupidly sarcastic. Grow up, please, this isn't helpful to anyone. You've written 3019 posts since you joined in Nov 2004. One yr. About EIGHT a day. Get a life and......
Leave me alone.

My personal opinion on this (and we ALL know what opinions are like) is that if she feels she can trust these people with her snake everything is fine. The telephone has been invented, and she can use it to keep tabs on her baby.

I don't have anyone I trust with my snakes, but I don't know these people, and she does!! Taking her snake home might not be the hassle she seems to think it is, but those are HER options to weigh.

Actually I'm a "He"...but the rest is accurate. ;)

^^ Great opinion. I too don't trust anyone else unless I KNOW them and I KNOW they respect and honour me and my concern for my animals. Petstores don't generally reach that criteria, do they?
But I guess they certainly CAN sometimes- there ARE competant people (employees) everywhere- few and far between in these circumstances, but nonetheless, still there. So you're right- and I am wrong. :)

Yes, I'm an a-hole. Yes I'm critical and yes I'm sarcastic, especially when it's all deserved. And for you, it's all deserved and then some. You responded 3 times to a post and all of your responses made NO sense whatsoever. You can say that my posts to you aren't helpful to anyone, well, your posts sure as hell aren't helpful to anyone because they make no sense.

I have a life, snakes are just a part of them, and so is this forum. Instead of going out every night and wasting $15 at the bar, I come here and relax before I go to bed. If that makes me not having a life then I suppose that I'm a loser then.

^^Now really, WHO is making NO sense here? Are you seriously making conclusions that I drink everynight? I'm a 47 yr. old diabetic with a heart condition. If I drink, I die. I'm 6' and weigh 128. Please think before you speak. I've been nearly dead 3 times. You need your mouth washed out with soap. My own son wouldn't speak as you do to ANYONE, especially someone he's never met or knows. Again, grow up! And get a frickin' life for the love of God- 22 yrs. old and nothing to do? Go get laid, asshole.
