Snake Tracker Question

I am relatively new to herping and I downloaded the snake tracker software. I think it is great but what I am wondering is how important is it to track all the stuff it allows you to track. For instance I only track the feeding of the snakes, I do not track the shedding, temps, or pooing.

Do others do this and am I missing something? If you do track all categories, for what purpose?

I track feeding and shedding as health indicators. If a snake's eating normally but not gaining weight, or eating normally but gaining weight disproportionately, then I may choose to get it checked by my vet. By regular tracking, I've built up a picture of what's "normal" for each individual, so I know, for example, when a particular snake is going to go off its food each year and I don't panic.

I don't track pooping or temps.

That's pretty lame programmed. Just some components trown on and off you go :/ I can make a much better one. If anyone is interested in a really good working program i'm ready to begin working on it. I haven't had an interesting Delphi project in a long time. I would need everyones suggestions and what features should be build in.

Greetings,
Jicin

I record all eating and shedding activities. I also record any supplementation and any drugs given, and weight every two weeks for the adults.
I only record poop if there is a health issue with the snake and so I may need to know when and other gory details.
I record room temperature and humidity daily, but not for specific cages. Finally, I record when cages are cleaned, any matings and egg layings.

Don't think that was necessary. The question did not have to do with whether the program was any good or not, which I think it is perfect. So If you are so much better than other people write one and post it for free like Marcel does and then we can be the judge.

I didn't mean it like that. Sorry.

But it *is* very quickly made. A few database edit fields and a database grid. Something i identify as a quickreport or related component linked to the database and voila. Really not more then a few hours work. The idea is good but should be incorporated into a more 'stable' program. Protected against wrong user imput and actually program error handlers. Not let Windows go beserk at you. I can make a much better program and yes if i would make it (Would probably take a few weeks at least) it would be freely available. And i could add a lot more or neat features such as printing out reports, create photo albums, alerts on feeding times and other pre-defined agenda points. A roomy space to add more info about the snake ect.

Frankly, I just use a notepad and list feeding days, shedding cycles, lengths and any other pertinent information. I can look back and see how much they've grown, feeding behaviors, and any changes if there's been a regurge.

You can write letter and books using notepad. But some people prefer Word. If enough people would like a program to use to keep track and such i could make one. Otherwise i wouldn't bother. Though perhaps i could make a simple one just for myself to make simple queries and such. I think a program would really be valuable if you have a lot of snakes to track.
I've worked as a programmer for a while but i wasn't really good at it. I can make a simple database program though. It's not to difficult. More time consuming to make it perfect. It can be a lot of fun if i'd help other people with it.

Do u really need 2 keep track of shedding cycles, lengths and all of that? I keep track of wen i feed them buts that bout it. I didnt really think it was necessary to keep track of all that other stuff. And Jicin if i do need 1 of those things u said u culd build 1 how much wuld that be n how wuld u ship it since u live in the netherlands.

I'd make it for free. I have no idea why i would need to ship it. It's the internet remember. I'd simply upload it ;)

Greetings,
Jicin

O ok so if i do actually need it wuld u make it for me. Also i wuldnt really no how 2 use it so u wuld hav to tell me how. Thanks

I confess - I do all my recording on paper with good old-fashioned pen. It's hard enough to make myself write it all down anyway - then heading off to the computer to enter it all would just take me too long. I do like to have the records though, and I have often found them useful to look back on something. It all depends on how many animals you keep. The more you have, the harder it is to remember particular details about what you did when to any one of them. It's also nice to look back on past problems and see what you did about it and whether it worked so you can make more informed decisions in the future.

Ive been writing down wen my snakes eat but thats about it. Do u think i shuld write down wen it sheds n its lengths. I measured them 1 time but i didnt write it down or nething. Also wen i did measure them they moved round 2 much so it was a lil difficult 2 measure them. I just used a regular ruler 2 measure them is there sumthn out there that is easier 2 measure snakes with?

There's a snake measuring program that serpwidget has that's great. I downloaded it and use it all the time. It doesn't matter what you record. I just like to track my snakes growth and eating habits. I find it interesting to look back and see the pattern of feeding and sheds, how quickly they go up in food size etc.

Yes, it's a free download. Go to serpwidgets website and get it. If you go on the search mode here, you can find it also. I think you just have to type in snake measurer and it should show the threads that it's in.

Skye, is the snake in your avatar shedding and eatting simultaneously? If so, thats one crazy snake.

I only have one snake, so I haven't been logging any of his activities. Though he eats on a regular schedule most of the time, and sheds regularly.

(guys won't wanna listen) I never kept track of my period either, I was just like "its been a while, so it'll come soon".

i feed all of them at the exact same time, but i keep track to see if they need and increase on their food. Sometimes, if they eat a whole bunch, i move them up either a size of mouse or a day of digestion...

Leia,

yes - he certainly is. He always was an impatient boy!

On the recording front I don't record lengths - it would just take too lmuch time.
