Snakes Are Smarter Than One Would Think

ive had heavy objects hold down the top cover of my tank (shoes, textbooks...) and with this on, my snake had never even gone up towards the top of the cage.

i took my chemistry textbook off a few minutes ago (to start hw) and what i noticed is that within a minute, my snake stiffened up and started raising to the top. its head is constantly checking out the mesh cover and trying to poke at it.

now i know that snakes want to escape and will try every avenue possible. but the amazing part is that it was intelligent enough to know the purpose of random heavy objects such as shoes and textbooks and with that knowledge, know when to try to escape.

amazing.

Yeah, corn are the escape artist. on a side note they do have clips to hold down the mesh covers, I use them and they work fine.

i think if i ever get another corn, id call it Houdini...

i prefer heavy objects instead of clips. i just like the fact of having raw weight on top. i just put a text book in the middle and one shoe on each the left and right side (even the shoes are over-kill.) no problems... my corn never escaped *knocks on wood*

You may prefer heavy objects, but the wide, black tank clips are much more secure (1 per side). And your viv will look a lot better without shoes and books piled up on it. :)

I have Houdini.....

My first corn we named Houdini. He's three now. He escaped two times and both times he was gone for a few weeks. He is now in an inescapable viv.

I had a 10g glass viv that had 4 huge phone books on the top. 2 on each side. I woke up one morning to find my snake slithering on the floor next to the stand that I keep his viv on. Needless to say, I went and bought a locking lid that day. That was about 2 months ago and haven't had problems since.
