snakes smell

Im bringing home a ball python in a few days. Iv been regulating his Viv. I Think i have it where i want it. Id like to put my corn in the tank for a while to make sure the head pat doesn't get to hot with a snake resting on it and to make sure the heat control device i bought still holds the same heat with a snake on the thermostat. Would the smell of a corn snake being in the tank cause any problems once i put the python in it.

wait, you gonna put a corn snake in a tank to see if it gets too hot?

why dont you just put a temp probe on it to monitor the temp?
the snake being "on" the probe will not make a difference in temp, with my experiences anyway.

as far as the smell of a snake to another, not sure.

from what i have read, a BP needs higher temps than a corn, so if that is true and you have BP temps, I would NOT put the corn in there.

no im not going to put the corn in there to see if it gets to hot, you miss understood what i was saying.

ok, I guess I misunderstood this....:shrugs:

That's what I understood, that the OP was going to use a corn to gauge the temps. If you wrote what you meant the wrong way please re-word it so we can understand. Otherwise we have no choice but to believe you are risking your corn's life to test a BP tank which YES it does have to have higher temps.

I think the OP is wondering whether the act of adding a snake to the tank will change the temps. I suppose thinking that a snake coiled on top of the UTH may trap more heat and raise the effective temps.

If that concerns you, you could try a rubber snake or anything that will sit on the heat pad and insulate it. Maybe a stuffed animal.

But honestly, I think you are worrying unnecessarily. If your temps are in the safe range, then adding the snake won't change that much. I would only be worried if you were on the cusp of dangerous temps already.

It is remotely possible that the snake may cause a minor heat accumulation...However, if you are using a thermostat, the only thing that will even MAYBE happen is that it hits the cut off point sooner.
