I have a 6 month old kingsnake who has been eating perfectly since I got him 4 months ago. He was eating 1 pinkie every 5 days for a while until I eventually moved him up to 3 pinkies every 5-7 days to get rid of the pinkies because he's 20+ inches long now and big enough to move on to fuzzies. Unfortunately the two times I've given him a fuzzy he just completely ignores it. It's like he can't see or smell it. Any suggestions? I'd rather not pith the FT mouse if I don't have to but I will if that's necessary.
 
Have you thought about trying peach fuzzies as an intermediate step? I have a bloodred female who won't take anything with fur, but she'll eat peach fuzzies...if not, I'd try braining the fuzzy or even just offering a fuzzy head and offering the body once the snake is willing to eat the fuzzies.
 
God how gross....lol. I will have to try that then. I'm not sure what a peach fuzzy is but I can imagine it. Are they widely available? I got my fuzzies at Petco and it was a total rip off so I plan to get my feeders online now.
 
online is a better plan. many people on here like 'the mouse factory'. i know they've got a great website.

The things we do for our snakes... :laugh: I spend a lot of time messing with F/T mice for some of my picky eaters...

I would try going to a local pet store instead of Petco or Petsmart to see about getting feeders. Because you only have one snake, online ordering really isn't cost effective (until your snake is eating adults, then it might make sense...but because he is still growing, ordering 100 peach fuzzies that he's going to grow out of in 3 months just isn't a good plan). My local pet store will cull and freeze exactly what size mice and/or rats that I need. I buy online in large quantities, but occasionally I don't order enough or end up buying a snake that is eating something other than what is in the 'stockpile' in my freezer. It is great to know that one phone call to the store will get me the exact size I need (I can even go in and hand choose the animals I want to be culled) in a timely manner, without having to pay ridiculous pet store prices (I still end up paying WAY more than online cost, but if I ask for 5 of whatever size, the girl gives me about 15 and only charges me for 5 :D).

You can also try picking up feeders at a reptile show if there is one near you. They'll still be more than online, but you won't have to pay the shipping charges, so in the end you'll probably save money.

As for online purchasing, I use RodentPro. I've never had an issue with them, their prices are very good and the shipping is reasonable. There have been people that have had problems, but I've been using them for about 3 years with no problems. The Mouse Factory is also a favorite around here.
 
I get my rodents at rodentpro.com. Their website is great, and they have a wide variety of feeder mice. I was getting the mice at Petsmart, but they were too expensive. 6 pinkies for 11.98 was too much...so now i get 100 pinkies. Its a good deal. Also, experiment with your pinkies if you have picky snakes. Good luck with your snake
 
Go to micedirect.com peach fuzzies are $7.00 for 100 plus the cost of shipping or you can see if there is someone local who might split an order with you. It still beats petco cost.
 
I would try peachies before I get a head of myself, if I was you :) They are normally available just about anywhere. They are just a little bigger than pinkies but just have the hair starting to come out. I am thinking y our king is maybe like mine.... Doesnt think it can take anything too much biggie than its own head. That is probably the problem, IMHO. Try going to any pet store and ask about seeing the sizes and pick one that is just abit bigger than pinks. you will find out that a huge number of places have different names for each size so.... the only way to tell for yourself what you will is to either see or feel it (I know some places, like petsmart) have them in packages you cant see through. I am sure once you find the right size that your king will eat with little problems :)
