Hey guys. First post.

I got this little guy at Petco. He's healthy, strong and is really cool.

My kids love him already, but the snake gets a little flighty when the kids get too excited and move towards him too fast. They're still too young to handle him (4 and 2).

Anyway, I switched him over to newspaper, as I find that it isn't too bad visually and I prefer it over spending 8 bucks a bag of reptile bark.

I took out the hide as he prefers to either stay out in the open or curl up under the newspaper. I fold the newspaper so a part of it is raised just a little making little caves all around his tank. His name is Mr. T.

Hi, welcome! Mr. T is a cutie. I don't think it matters what you use for hides as long as the snake has places it feels comfortable, with a temperature gradient. One of my younger snakes ignores his hides and makes burrows in his aspen shavings where he wants them.

Welcome to the forum! The bedding designed for reptiles is usually pretty pricey, but you can always get shredded aspen from the rodent section for a much better price. I would probably leave the hides in there, even if he prefers to be under the newspaper.

Wow .. Newspaper will look horrendous especially for a Snow corn IMHO.

Just bite the bullet and buy some orchid bark which will enhance the brightness of your beautiful Snow !

Orchid bark can be washed / swilled in a diluted F10 mixture , dried out and reused endlessly ...

I think newspaper would look just fine! However, I think hides are really important for snakes. You may want to consider putting one back in, that way if s/he wants to hide without burrowing the option is there.

Congrats on your new baby! They're so much fun : )

Took some more pics this morning.

I have him in a 10 Gal. tank right now. It's real warm in So. CA., even at night right now, so no heat source. Today, I'll have a lamp over his tank as it's feeding day.

Is there a way to edit posts on this board?

Anyway, as a first time snake owner, I have a few questions and comments of course...

1. How long can this guy live in a 10 gallon tank? Do I just eyeball it, and decide one day he should move into a bigger pad? Or is there a set size limit standard.

2. Regarding temps: right now, even early morning temperatures inside his tank never gets below 74-75°, but late afternoon temps can climb a bit to upper 80s unless I turn on the AC, so I think heating only after meals is good enough untill like October...?

Other than that, he seems like just another run-of-the-mill Snow corns, and I'll post some pics in about 6 months to a year.

cute little snow. Honestly I wouldn't use that heat lamp. Snakes need belly heat more then ambient heat to digest. not really sure about the tank size as my adult is in a 4'x2'. my juvies are in a 32q tubs and babies are in 6qt tubs.

as far as temps, i keep a temperature gradient going at all times, 74-77 on one side and 83-86 on the warmer side.

Oh and in order to edit posts you need to be a contributing member :)

I follow the rule of thumb to move to a larger tank when the snake is as long as the the front plus one side of the tank. My babies are in 10 gallons (about 20" x 10" I think) until 30" long, and my adults are in 38 or 40 gallons. I'd go even bigger if I had anywhere to put larger tanks but I don't.

I agree with the above about heating and gradient. I don't have the same climate as you but I use heat mats on thermostats and I never have to give it a second thought.

He's a stunning looker though and will simply just blend into the background of newspaper .. that's why orchid bark is used at snake shows to enhance the colours of albinos and bright coloured snakes / lizards etc .. It's the same principal used in tropical fish display tanks .. Just a thought ..

Lovely little snow, nice setup. Aspen shavings are fairly inexpensive in bulk. And absorbent. Is there a regional farm/feed supply store in your area? Aspen is sometimes also on petmountain dot com and amazon.
