Hey guys, i don't post here frequently, but read the threads religiously everyday, lol. Just so much info to learn...so i like checking it often. So i figured you guys could help me out a bit.

I'm relatively new to snakes in general...but i guess i can't help feeling i want more and more. I originally wanted a milksnake, but after my first reptile expo, i came home with a charcoal corn i fell in love with. that was about 3 months ago...and i love her to death. Then as i searched online, i really fell in love with the okeetees...and again, at the last show, i got one of those (he's the sweetest little thing!)

So now my question is...what should i get next? I had really wanted an albino nelson's or albino tangerine milksnake, but after handling some at a show and realizing how "flighty" they are...i would really like something a little tamer and mellower like a corn. Something about the same size of an adult corn is a great size too...and something fatter is fine. But i'm not looking for something that's going to grow so large (girth wise) that i'll be feeding rabbits or anything like that. And i'm also interested in things with different morphs...just for variation. Anybody have any suggestions as to what i should look into?

Thanks in advance,
~Chibs :)

What about a kingsnake? Even though they are so closely related to milks, you just don't hear about the secretiveness or flightiness with kings. (And if you have your heart set on a milk- people say they grow out of a lot of that by age two or three.) There are all the different colors of California King, to begin with. Florida Kings are also very popular. Then there are all the different Mountain Kings- nice tri-colored snakes. Gray Bands. Mexican Black Kings! Then there are plenty of more obscure varieties- Eastern, Speckled, Desert...The care of kings is virtually identical to corns.

Maybe you could find an older milksnake that wasn't flighty. I've seen breeding size milks at shows.

Or, what about a Rosy Boa? I don't have one, but I fell in love with one at a show and would really, really like to have one or a pair someday. They stay smaller than a corn.

Then there are hognoses, Western and Tri-color. Really, really cool little snakes.

Still, I think a king would be your best bet.

When you say you want something the same size as a corn and mellow, I think of the snakes I've heard often actually seem to want to come out of the cage:

"brooksi" king snake (is that the correct name? I dunno) - This species has lots of morphs.
russian rat snake - Not really any morphs with these guys.

Black milk snakes are supposed to be mellow, but I would guess that they're pretty secretive.

Of course there are exceptions. But these snakes have a reputation for being very very easy going.

hey, thanks for the responses :) I was definately looking into kingsnakes, but i haven't done much research on them, but probably at the top of my list of things to look into. I was also thinking about a ball python, and while i'd love to have one...i'm not too keen on the idea of maintaining humidity, which i don't think would be too difficult, i just want to make sure i'm ready for something that can grow thick and large enough to eat small rabbits :( lol. And as far as finding an older milksnake that's not so flighty...i've love to find an adult or something...but at the shows, there's only little, teeny tiny babies :( lol But kingsnake research it is! thx!

Chibs,
I am going to be blunt and honest here but its also from experience. I would hold off on getting any more snakes for at least 6 months to almost a year.

Here is my reasoning, you need to Quarantine your snakes to about that long. Slow down a bit let your other snakes get bigger and then get another after doing lots of research. And then get this guy, place him in a different room and again start the process all over again in Quarantining your snake.

Many herp diseases can take up to about a year before they show up in your pets. Would you want to bring in an infected animal and then have it pass along to your other pets?

I think this is something many of the more experienced keepers tend to forget about to mention here at CS.

And the snake I recommend is the MBK as a next pet.
