As my yellow rat has become more active and is finally eating again I gave his a thorough once over and found this. <a href="http://tinypic.com?ref=2j4xamg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i62.tinypic.com/2j4xamg.jpg" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic"></a>

it looks at first glance like a wood chip going in the wrong way or a scab. could it have been some especially gross defecation that decided to stick around? i poked it with disinfected tweezers and he didn't flinch so i don't think it's hurting him.

It's hard to tell with the blurry photo. Can you post a clearer one?

One of my snakes once got a piece of aspen stuck in his hemipene. I have no idea how it happened, because I wasn't breeding him on aspen or anything. He didn't like me touching it, but I was able to pull it out after a few attempts. It left a sore mark, so then I gave him daily baths in diluted betadine and it healed up.

Here's the thread about it if you want to compare it to yours: http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=129814

Sorry for the delay in posting a better pic. Beatrix ate two days ago and I wanted to give him the chance to rest up. It looks like the "scab" has fallen off a bit but like there is still something stuck underneath the vent scales.

yep. he's defecated in his usual ostentatious style all over the tank. he's feeding regularly too and his warm spot is set to 84*F. He hasn't been losing weight. I wonder if he didn't just cut himself sometime when I let him crawl in the grass last month.
