Hello,

I have put a lot of research into snakes and I have concluded that I want to get a corn snake. I do not intend to breed the snake at this time.

I just have some questions for some more experienced snake owners.

1. What are some morphs that are nice? (I really like the ghost morphs myself)

2. Should I get a newborn snake to start with, or start with a larger yearling or even an adult?

Hi and welcome! I love my corn snakes and I think they make excellent pets, especially as a first snake.

My first snake was a hatchling, and I think that most people start off with a baby. However, it's never a bad idea to get a well-started snake like a yearling. At that age, you can be sure that they're eating and they're not as fragile as a tiny baby.

As for morphs, ghosts are lovely and not too hard to find. There's a for sale section on this site if you scroll down a bit. I know we have a couple of breeders in Canada. (If you scroll even farther down, there's a sub-forum for Canadian members.)

I'd also recommend that you look through this site http://iansvivarium.com/morphs/species/elaphe_guttata/?sid= for pictures and names of morphs that you might like.

Good luck!

Hi!
My first snake was a 3-year old, so I definitely suggest getting a yearling. :) They've already been well started and you can see some of the adult color (for morphs that change, like classics) as well as get a good idea of how it will act.

They really are great pets, mine hardly ever sits still and loves to hide inside my sweaters.

I have 3, I just got all of them recently. One yearling amazing, a bit shy but coming around. She's super sweet! my normal who is super active. He never sits still! And my most recent must be almost 3years old.. The first couple of weeks I had him, he pretended he was a rattle snake!!! I was a bit nervous, but I took him out anyways, he is finally coming around an getting used to me ! I find older is good, but it depends how they may have been handled in the past..

Welcome!
I personally went with a yearling+ because I was worried about the fragility of a hatchling, not to mention possible escapes! I waited for my second snake to get a baby... which ended up being a ball python that is larger than my corn as a hatchling anyways!
As for morphs, I'm sure many others will tell you to just get whatever you like best :) I know that is very, very broad, but there are SO many variations out there. It all depends on your preferences.

A ghost was my first! And I started out with hatchlings, they were about 2-3 months old when I got them.

My first dozen or more were wild caught adults. When I was a kid, even the ones in pet stores were wild caught. Now I feel like the old complaining codger. And there was no Internet! Or even cable! And I rode my bike to school and football practice.

You are at the right place to learn everything about corn snakes! We can't really answer what color of snake (or age) would be right for you, but there are pros and cons that will help you make your decision. Welcome to the forums!
