Specific Feeder & Supplier Questions

Kate

I Love Herps!
I have an adult female Snow, who is ~4'8" in length.
She has been neglected & fed live (not by me, I will be posting a lengthy thread later on the subject)

I want to change her over to f/t feeders, of course! I have a few questions on the subject:
What size rat will compare to a lg. adult mouse, so I can give her a higher fat content for a while?

How many can I buy at one time with her as my single snake?

I will probably be feeding 1 every 7-10 days, lengthening the time as she fills in a bit.

I am in TX, which supplier has quality? I have seen the positive reviews for Big Cheese Rodents, but can I get a quantity reasonable for a single snake?

Buying from a supplier for a single snake is an expensive undertaking. The shipping will usually be way more than the order.
My adult snakes take weanling rats, I have a couple larger adults that can take bigger. The best thing to do is feed her a prey item that is no more than 1.5 times her widest girth. A lot of folks don't like rats, they say they can't get their snakes to go back to mice. Mine personally don't care if it is a rat or a mouse as long as it is food. I hope this helps out some.

Thanks, Crotalis!!
How else would I get frozen feeders, but from a supplier?
Would a pet store have good quality frozens?

Most pet stores that carry frozen get their from the big suppliers. So should be good feeders as long as they have not had them a great long time.

You might be able to go in on an order with someone else to make it more economical. I wouldn't give rats personally and just stick with mice. You could feed every 6-7 days if you want to get a little meat on her quicker. You might have someone locally you could buy from that would be in between bulk pricing and pet store pricing.

google "reptile expo in (your state or area)" or reptile show or something like that. that's how I got my snake and feeders. They had coffin freezers full of mini pinkies to largest snake fare. Even had live pinkies and everything after. Hopefully you live near an area that has them. I happen to live where I can go to one every month.

DFW (Arlington) road trip time...the Aug NARBC show is going on THIS weekend at the Arlington Convention Center right next to Arlington Stadium.

Then again, Spring is somewhat of a long drive...

There's a Repticon in Oct in Houston (Pasadena).

Different note...

For an animal that is malnourished/underweight it wouldn't be wise to feed prey items that are high/higher in fat. Multiple smaller meals more frequently would be best as to not severely tax the digestive and excretory systems; particularly if the animal is seriously malnourished. And though live isn't exactly the safest option to feeding, as long as the animal doesn't have any current or past injuries potentially from live prey attacks, then it isn't necessarily neglect. I had a green tree python, only snake out of 30+ back then, that refused to touch anything dead -- only snake in the collection that was that way. It took me 2 years to get him onto frozen.

Thank you guys!

And Herps of NM, thank you for the advice!
I am writing up my LONG post about Gaia right now, I will link it when finished, her being fed live has little or nothing to do with her neglect, done properly, especially with picky snakes, I see very little wrong with live feeding!
