Sphagnum moss

Is there a particular kind of sphagnum moss to use in a humid hide? I use whole uncut sphagnum in my trees(I'm a bonsai artist), but I wasn't sure if its the right kind to use for snakes. The moss Ive seen in pics in the photo gallery looked cleaner than the moss I have. I buy mine from the big box stores in the garden center. Any suggestions are welcome!

A bonsai artist you say? I've always been interested in bonsai; I've read a couple books, but I can't seem to make the jump to get one myself. I had a dream of having a small bonsai tree/bush in my snakes tank or just to have a nice sized tree to take pictures of my snake on. Ever done anything like this?

Hi,

I've been using Exo Terra Forest Moss from PetSmart for my humid hides. I have only had corn snakes for a little over a year, but the snakes really seem to enjoy it. I get 2 dry blocks for under $10, and it lasts a long time.

By the way, that's a Dog Fish Head bottle in your avatar, right? I used to live in Salisbury, MD, and I took a field trip to their brewery as part of a Microbiology class. Good stuff, but I don't find it very often down here!

Well Im new to corn snakes, I bought my girlfriend one for Valentines Day this year, but I definitely will be taking pics of our snakes on my trees this year, if you do plan on getting into bonsai, do a little research and you can find that almost any tree or shrub can be turned into a beautiful tree with some care and patience. most people get discouraged because they see how much a "finished" bonsai can cost, but you can take shrubs and trees from the big box stores and train them to become bonsai. It takes a few years to get them there and thats where the the patience comes in but its so fun!!!

heres a couple of sites to take a look at
this ones my favorite!

Thanks for the reply! I'll see if they have some next time I go there, the stuff I have now is dirty with grass and twigs all in it.

And yes thats a Dog Fish Head bottle!!! Great stuff!! I have yet to tour the brewery but my girlfriends parents live about 20 miles away from the brewery so we are planning on taking the tour and having dinner at the restaurant in Rehoboth while we are up there visiting her parents!

This is exactly what I use, but when I pulled some out for my snakes it was rather dirty so I didnt think it would be safe to use. I guess I will just take out the sticks and other debris and use this for my snakes! Thanks for the input!!!

last year i had an INCREDIBLY hard time coming across sphagnum moss. i swear, i looked everywhere. i finally came across a garden center that was willing to give me 2 huge bags for free, because they were ripped.

it was definitely "dirty" moss. but i just took out the clumps that looked good, baked it in the oven until everything was dried out, and then compacted it into a grocery bag and stored in the freezer. that ensures there aren't going to be any little bugs running around. it was definitely a PAINSTAKING procedure to go through everything and bake it, but i think it was worth it in the end. pet shops charge an absolutely insane amount of money for sphagnum moss.

Yes, baking it for about 30-60 min at 200 degrees will kill off any stowaways.

Also I've heard of people washing it in a diluted bleach solution- but I would think that would be messier.

FYI: you can REUSE moss from year to year if you clean it properly between uses I have read.
At $4/bag it isn't worth the trouble to me, but if you are frugal and have the time to clean moss, you might want to look into that.

I have tried Bonsai a few times. I got into it when I started Karate years ago and was into everything Asian. Ironically, the main problem I had with them was giving TOO much attention. I over watered and over pruned and killed them within a couple months.

I might get one for my tank. They are fairly easy to grow as long as you leave them alone. And I am sure the snake would love it. Lots of climbing space. Anyone know if juniper bad for snakes? It seems suspiciously close to cedar which I know is bad.

But there are many types of Bonsai, including deciduous types like Oak. Mature Bonsai can be expensive, but here in Denver we have a few places that sell starter plants for around $10 or so. The old Bonsai are the ones that are expensive, because they have thick/gnarled trunks due to their maturity, and are literally miniature trees. The young ones basically look like normal plants. This is probably what you can get for $10 or so:

That is Rosemary, but the Juniper ones look similar. It would still look cool in a Vivarium, and I have been wanting to use live plants anyway.
