Sphagnum Moss

I saw a bag of Sphagnum moss (Miracle Gro brand)at Home Depot and wanted to get it for my snakes for shedding, but I wanted to know if there were any bugs/pestisides/parasite/mites....anything like that in it that could harm a snake?

Is it the big, fluffy kind of moss, green and brown? Or is it the fine peat-y moss? I think it has to be the fluffy kind to work right.

If it isn't packaged for reptiles, it probably hasnt been properly cleaned. Sphagnum moss is popular for landscaping and gardening projects. For these types of uses, the presence of mites and parasites is inconsequential, and so it isn't cleaned for them. If it is packaged for reptile use, it has been properly cleaned and treated to prevent the spread of mites and parasites.

A safer bet is bleach-free and dye-free papertowels soaked in water, wrung out gently, and palced in a "humid hide". For examples of humid hides, do a search and you will get a load of information.

I've heard horror stories of creepie crawlies coming out of bags from gardening centers. It's much better to buy a product made specifically for reptiles.

Sorry to jump in, as I'm very new, but I'd also be worried about the possibility of fertilizer being in the moss, since it's from Miracle Gro.

Agreed. Miracle Gro is a fertilizer brand. If the moss is that brand, it more than likely has had fertilizer added to it.
