Hi guys. I'm newly registered as a member after reading thru all the messages and thought i could definatley get good advice. I have a 5month old amel corn. He/She eats 2/3 fuzzies a week without fail, doesn't regurg at all. Very voracious feeder, this is the problem, he's so eager to grabthe dead fuzzie he leaps at it but this time he struck the cork hide and has a splinter in the gum. I took most of it out but can't get the wee bit left. He refused food also. Its only 2 days since the incident but he never refuses. Please offer any assistance.

I don't think this happen alot so the replys may be few but you might need a helper to hold the snake while remove the rest of the splinter, if you can still see it or better yet take it to a reptile vet.
Also so I would stretch out the feeding. Every two day is too much. And if your feeding two to three fuzzy a shotthe snake is ready to be bump up at least a hopper if not a mouse.

Good Luck

I'd like to know why he struck at the cork hide. My wild guess would be your feeding it in the viv. But i could be wrong . If you are. It would be wise to get a seperate container to feed them in. just my .02

If you cant get the small piece of wood out of its mouth, id suggest you take him to a vet, cause if left in the snakes gum it can get infected and cause mouth rot, which can be a bad thing. Are you feeding inside the cage? If you are feed him in a separate container next time, that will prevent this problem from occurring again. Thats all the advice i can give you. Just try your best at taking the little piece of wood out of his gum, after its out wait at least a week before you feed again. Please keep us updated!

Yeah, I did want to jump on everything.
And I never heard that you could get a splinter from cork.

Neither have I. But i remember now some types of cork can give you splinter because their not properly "sanded" per say. BUt this is an interesting post now. Thanks for opening my eyes to that.

I do feed in the viv. I didn't know you shouldn't but now i guess it makes sense. I will arrange a vet. Thanks and will keep it updated.

I had him checked out first by petshop owner who also showed me the correct and easy way to open the mouth so that looked clear, but took to vet anyway who says mouth fine. Am relieved. Still not taken foor but he is blue just now so will wait till after shed. Thanks everyone for messaging.
