Spring Fast?? (Southern Hemisphere)

Good day

My 3 year old male corn who passed the 300 gram mark a little while ago is behaving very strangely.

He is incredibly active, constantly looking for a way of the viv. My temps are within the correct range. He has lived in this viv quite happily for over a year, but now he very active. Also, he is not interested in eating, I've tried all the tricks that I have seen looking at threads dealing with feeding issues. I have gone as far as to try live, but no luck.

Could this be a spring fast and that his mind is, shall we say, not exactly on food? I'm in the Southern hemisphere, Cape Town to be precise so we are starting to edge into spring, some trees are starting to bud etc.

Many thanks

Yup, sounds like he's got girls on his mind! Once my boys get into that mood, I weigh 'em, then offer feeds @ once a month, otherwise I'd just be wasting a lot of mice. They tend to stay in 'party mode' for 3-4 months and lose a bit of weight, then eat like crazy by the end of summer.

Thanks Diamondlil, was starting to get a bit worried, he's been in "party mode" for about a month now. And yes, i have wasted a few mice. So I can expect another 2 to 3 months of this. At least he was eating well before this started so he's got some "stores".

Poor guy. :)

!t's hardwired into the male corn's to try to find a female when the sap rises! It's a shame they can't be neutered and lose the urge if they're not breeders, IMO. This year I ddn't even monitor the big boys' weight, I knew they'd start eating again and had plenty of reserves. The younger ones I did weigh, I think the most weight loss was @20gs. I haven't anywhere to brumate them over the winter so they regain condition and some by the time Spring comes around again

Yeah, the first couple of springtimes with Bob, our 950g amel, we got really worried. Now we know he's not going to eat for two to three months, and is going to wear a groove in the glass of his enclosure going around and around and around. I'm going to get before-and-after weights next Spring just to see how much weight he loses. We gotta get him a sweetie...

Thanks a million for the replies. I had my suspicions it was the "spring thing" but feel better now that I know.

If I knew what it was I would've weighed him before it started, but I know his weight was around the 320 gram mark. Wonder how much weight his going to lose, will weigh him again as soon as he starts eating, one day. :)

I have been thinking of getting him a sweetie.... :)
