Stacking Vivs?

Plissken

Crazy Snail Lady
Hi everyone, not sure if this is the right board to post this question...
I'm hoping soon to buy my first corn snake. I have a tank to keep him in, no problem, but if he and I get on well together I would be really interested in acquiring more corns.

However, I'm really low on space for tanks and have already had to shuffle furniture about to make room for the one tank. So, my question is, is it safe to stack vivariums one on top of the other? Or would the bottom vivarium collapse under the weight?

I'm particularily interested in the range of Aquapac Hobbyist vivariums, if anyone has any experience with these.

Most people here who have multiple corns usually shelf, or "rack" their tanks.. meaning they build shelves, or buy ones big enough, to house a couple of tanks, so that the weight isnt stack up on top of each tank. I'm sure if you look through the search option for "Racks", You'll find enough info to help you decide what's best for you.

Thanks for your quick reply :)

Is that what is meant by rack? I always thought that referred to when people have all those plastic tubs... I know, I'm naive :grin01:

I have seen that some people have those metal shelves which look quite strong, but I honestly have no idea where I would go to buy something like that around here. :shrugs:

Hey there, those metal shelf things can be bought at b&q, Do it All, Homebase, etc etc. They usually sell them with material liners that zip up the front, and people get them for spare-room or attic storage. I have 8 tanks just on a bog-standard book shelf unit, but my tanks are plastic so no danger of a collapse. Have a look at 2nd hand furniture stores, fleamarkets, car boot sales...... once you are focused on snake housing the weirdest bit of furniture suddenly strikes you as perfect :) I got my shelf unit second hand and am in the middle of converting an old shop display case into a massive viv. As long as you can heat it, see into it and put ventilation holes/replace a side with wire mesh, and make it escape free, then it's all good

heres mine

soon i will be getting 3 like the viv on top, i will be getting three 4 x 2 x 2s and they will all be stacked like what ive got, but ill be getting ridof those two when i get my new ones

Hey plissken look in places like b & q and argos. They have got a couple of plastic 4 shelf racks i have looked at as i will be expanding my corn collection soon :)

I'm about to get my first corn too. And, like you, I already plan on getting more. Being a poor college student, the "rack system" on planning on buying for my apartment next year is similar to the shelves I have in my dorm room this year. Cinder blocks and fiber board have always been the way to go for me when money was tight. Cinder blocks run about $.98 each, and you can buy enough medium-density fiber board for several shelves for $10-15. With standard cinder blocks, you'll be able to make shelves 16" deep, 16" high, and as long as you cut the fiber board. The whole thing is going to cost me about $25. Maybe it's a bad idea, who knows. But, it's what I can afford and it's always worked for me. Good luck!

There are some types of vivs that are stackable, but they are pretty expensive. The shelves described already would probably be your best bet.

I have one of those metal racks. I got it at Target when it was on sale and it only cost $27. If you're going to use the boards you might want to make double sure it can hold the weight. I'd hate for them to colapse :sidestep: .

I've searched the websites for B&Q, Homebase, Argos and even Ikea and I can't find any of those metal rack things other people seem to use. :shrugs: I'm at a complete loss as to what to use, the only things I could find were made of glass and that's hardly appropriate :grin01:

I use the hobbyist ones and as far as I can tell they are fine for stacking.

I have two three foot ones, one on top of the other and then two smaller tanks on top of those as well .... no problems.

It's not as if you have a concentration of weight in the middle of the viv ro something so you shouldn't have any problems.

:)

Thanks for the link, but I live in England, that would cost the earth to ship.

colinmcc - you've stacked them with no problems? I'm just worried the bottom viv would collapse, or the glass doors would shatter. My local pet shop stacks their vivs, but just because they haven't collapsed yet doesn't mean they never will. (Not saying yours will collapse! I'm just nervous about it)

I always thought the same thing

Since you're also in the UK I would suggest:

www.vivbuilder.co.uk

They have stacks in lots of different sizes of vivariums very similair to the hobbyist range:

It all depends on how many snakes you want...the biggest they offer is 3, but they also do custom built stack systems :)

Wow, Simply gorgeous!!!

They make these vivs and even breeder tanks to look like beautiful furniture, now. That is so awesome, since many of us like to have them around us all the time or at least within eye shot when we are home. But at the same time their tanks can be an eyesore.

The beauty and style of vivs like this or even some of the homemade ones I have seen in here make it literally a work of art or something that flows with your livingrooms, decor, etc. without standing out like a sore thumb.

Peronally if find people are more apt to find snakes appealing if their tank is appealing. I am referring to those people who normally freak out about snakes or them being in your home.

Metro Shelves

Plissken, I found out the silver metal shelves are called Metro Shelving. Hopefully having the name will help you locate it in your area. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. :)
